Lot going on here.

Conrad’s voice sounding AWFUL. Kevin Allen in prime ‘bored man looking forced to be there’ phase. Drummers hat falling down his face.

Yeah I get the 90s emo comparison for sure, as I mentioned upthread Unwound was a big influence on them, who while also are more “post-hardcore” also possess that emo element

I’ve never listened to Unwound, will stick some on later

Start with this track and you’ll immediately know what I’m talking about

That’s a great song and you can really see how similar it is.

At that Source Tags gig I think Jason started railing against Trump and republicans.
Conrad butts in
“whoaaa man, republicans are a much different better thing here”

Crowd: “yyyyeeeeeeeeoooooooooo!!!”

Edit: the gig was on the 12th July as well so good timing for such a statement by Conrad?

Can I just use the thread to be smug that when they did the Madonna tour, in Manchester they so did Source Tags in full

Love the intro to Days Of Being Wild

Just the yelp then straight into it

The end bit with the talking while Jason is singint and sounding like hes in desperation/ecstasy

Ah they’re such a special band

I saw them do Source Tags mid afternoon on the second stage at Latitude with about 20 other people, they didn’t even announce what they were doing in advance

I do feel bad for them cause every show I go to just has less and less people turning up

Honestly, anyone who can watch that racket and not enjoy it at least a bit can’t be my pal

I’ll 100% be doing a album to album listen

Ah I feel the same. Gone from fairly big venues to 200-300 capacity venues on the last couple of tours (great for me but it’s going to stop covering their costs at some point and that’s without the Pandy and Brexit).

Also on that Madonna tour at the Brighton show they followed it with most of Sources but didn’t fit it all in before the curfew!

I guess I was thinking of stuff like these, which I think share a tonal pallet and are…well, maybe not proggy but definitively have some ambition.

God, I love Constantines. Really I do.

Giving them a 5. Feels like I’m listening to them constantly and despite the large discography it’s like there’s never enough.

Somehow had never heard them until 2011 when I borrowed Source Tags from a former bandmate, I was hooked immediately. Loved the way Homage exploded out of the quiet bits and how massive and apocalyptic Days of Being Wild felt, and how they could balance those things with something as beautiful and sad as the title track (surprised that one hasn’t been mentioned yet).

Went to Worlds Apart next a couple years later. A completely different album obviously, but they pulled it off. The Rest Will Follow and Caterwaul are especially great - love that bit near the end of Caterwaul where they come in with a different melody. It’s good when bands defy expectations / take risks / don’t do the same thing every time.

Don’t think this one has been mentioned yet? Love that intro.

Maybe I’m just in take mode, but I’m feeling ready to commit to Lost Songs being the best one even though Source Tags feels more significant. It’s just relentless the whole way through and the added spaciness of the second half suits them really well. Perfect trail running music for late autumn when the grass has a crunch to it in the morning. Lots of really infectious melodies in there too, Time and Again and Heart of Wires will stay in my head all day.

Love how exciting this one is, it’s like it has bits of Silverfuck and Jesus Christ Pose woven in.

What a great, underrated album closer.

I’d never heard good things about Century of Self, but I finally gave it a shot a couple years ago after noticing @TKC’s enthusiasm and figuring I might as well complete their discography, and sure enough the world is wrong and it’s amazing.

I know Isis Unveiled has already been posted but it’s criminally low in the song poll so here it is again. What a song.

Really like Fields of Coal:

All of their albums (apart from So Divided) are at the very least good, with most of them being great. Love their ambition and how they draw from so many different styles and fuse them together so well.
Wish more bands would reinvent themselves the way they do.

Last time I saw them was at Night and Day in Manchester which is just a bar really. Great show but 200 people was probably pushing it

Don’t think anyone’s said it yet, but Catatonic is so good. Love when it basically turns into Feeder’s Stereoworld.

So glad you agree about Century! I think its a truly wonderful album. @Epimer mentioned the prog/punk mix and think this does it superbly.i absolutely love how some songs just break down to long instrumental bits and it has the best interplay of Jason and Conrad vocals - I am such a sucker for dual vocalists sounding like they’re doing different songs (hence why the Alexisonfire self titled is my favourite ever album) and Ascending is a great example

Lost Songs is oddly an album I haven’t revisited loads even though I do like it, so will make a point of playing it this week
