Giving them a 5. Feels like I’m listening to them constantly and despite the large discography it’s like there’s never enough.
Somehow had never heard them until 2011 when I borrowed Source Tags from a former bandmate, I was hooked immediately. Loved the way Homage exploded out of the quiet bits and how massive and apocalyptic Days of Being Wild felt, and how they could balance those things with something as beautiful and sad as the title track (surprised that one hasn’t been mentioned yet).
Went to Worlds Apart next a couple years later. A completely different album obviously, but they pulled it off. The Rest Will Follow and Caterwaul are especially great - love that bit near the end of Caterwaul where they come in with a different melody. It’s good when bands defy expectations / take risks / don’t do the same thing every time.
Don’t think this one has been mentioned yet? Love that intro.
Maybe I’m just in take mode, but I’m feeling ready to commit to Lost Songs being the best one even though Source Tags feels more significant. It’s just relentless the whole way through and the added spaciness of the second half suits them really well. Perfect trail running music for late autumn when the grass has a crunch to it in the morning. Lots of really infectious melodies in there too, Time and Again and Heart of Wires will stay in my head all day.
Love how exciting this one is, it’s like it has bits of Silverfuck and Jesus Christ Pose woven in.
What a great, underrated album closer.
I’d never heard good things about Century of Self, but I finally gave it a shot a couple years ago after noticing @TKC’s enthusiasm and figuring I might as well complete their discography, and sure enough the world is wrong and it’s amazing.
I know Isis Unveiled has already been posted but it’s criminally low in the song poll so here it is again. What a song.
Really like Fields of Coal:
All of their albums (apart from So Divided) are at the very least good, with most of them being great. Love their ambition and how they draw from so many different styles and fuse them together so well.
Wish more bands would reinvent themselves the way they do.
