They were genuinely original which is hard to come by and at their best (STRAWBERRY JAM/Merriwether and I guess sling Person Pitch in there) they were ace. Some fucking brilliant songs that sound like nothing else.

I enjoyed seeing them circa strawberry jam but after that they were abysmal live. Time and a place, 4/5

I’ve tried with them a few times but man, I don’t get it at all. 1/5

gonna find the dismissive takes on AC upsetting, ngl

will try to find time to write what they mean to me

they were so much deeper, weirder, sincere and brilliant than the critical voices could/can seem to understand

haven’t read the thread yet, but they changed ā€˜Here Comes the Indian’ to ā€˜Ark’ last year in the wake of BLM

guessing this will have been covered

the first time I saw them (ATP vs the Fans 2 I think? or maybe the EitS one), half a year before the release of MPP when they were playing those tunes anew, that was one of my favourite ever sets

the two others times, one had loads of dickhead student bandwagoners talking over the more exploratory parts, taking selfies in the crowd

the other, I can’t remember for anxiety reasons

I’m not counting anything beyond Fall Be Kind, although there have been a handful of nice tunes since

defs a downer that they went off the boil, but that initial fertile period from the jump was as fertile as any band has ever had… period (didn’t plan that, but it felt snappy aha)

Listening to them makes me feel like I’m the butt of a joke I don’t get. 1/5

I have fixed your post x

A 1/5 for me. The 1 is for the Panda Bear record Person Pitch which I associate with a time I was happy and really into buying music.

At least it’s not Dan Deacon, or that band who sounded like smurfs that you all pretended to like.

They had how many albums before MPP??? I really thought that was their first or second album.

Ill-equipped to rate but My Girls is a nice summery bop.

hmm, which stuff?

I’d disagree and say if we ever catch ourself thinking this, it’s us who have aged

the hype has aged, but the deep protean weirdness was always something different to the hype, and holds up if you get on its level

cosign a lot of this, especially the related weird and brilliant acts

Dan Deacon’s done some great music

coming from someone here who thought he was super annoying first album, btw

I think they’re good. There’s been some amazing stuff and some utter dross.

Seen them twice and thought they were great both times.

I totally understand why people can’t stand them.

Prince Rama still in my top ten favourite live shows. Just an example of having a vision and committing to it so hard.

Might listen to Strawberry Jam while I’m working, see if I can recapture some of the magic.

Just remembered this song too, which I loved until a night where we went on a massive MDMA bender and I can barely listen to it without going into a cold sweat anymore, My fault, not the song’s.

Shots fired. I LOVE Dan Deacon. The second half of America is one of the best pieces of music of the last 10 years.

I much prefer their EP’s to their albums, Fall Be Kind and Prospect Hummer are consistently great. Prospect’s title track is up there for my favourite song but Graze pips it, love the transformation from gauzy psychedelia into a ridiculously catchy bop

Remember dragging my mates to see them on the Carling Stage at Leeds Festival in 2006 (between Feels and Strawberry Jam?) in a You gotta see these guys they’re amazing! sort of situation. Much as I loved them at the time, it was really, really poor. Just weird extended, unrecognisable jams and the tent was pretty much empty before it ended. It wasn’t like they were confrontationally out there, they just seemed bored as fuck and like they didn’t give a single shit.

Prefer Panda Bear’s solo stuff.
I like what they are trying to do (ā€œeverything at onceā€), but only a select few can pull that off.
Those few being everything everything, siruismo and aphex twin.
