May have to move my score down to a 2, actually. I could put together a 50 minute best of but would have no desire to listen to any of it (excepting burn baby burn)

(Neville Southall hearing someone slagging off 1977)

‘Well done, he’s 15’

Never heard of that video but the text in red here especially has not aged well. (CW: a selection box of hmmmmmmery)

Always been convinced ‘Burn Baby Burn’ is just a sped up version of this:

solid ‘who cares’ from me, not even worth thinking of a rating

This is pretty much my exact take and score.

My daughter is very in to the Shaun The Sheep movie which meant I was hearing this several times a day and assumed it was some dusty old one hit wonder from the late 80s / early 90s. Was pleasantly surprised to find out it was ya boy Tim Wheeler. Bloody good beige songwriter isn’t he.

I voted 3/5 because 1977 is great and Nu Clear Sounds was fine. Would probably be a 4 if they hadn’t continued their boring trajectory.

Ignoring Bono this was a lovely moment

One of my fav riffs ever and riffs are an important medium for me so that’s a 5

Just because we all listened to them as teens doesn’t mean they’re good.

1/5 from me.

This is you agreeing, yes?

If Ash finish below Blink 182 I will riot

reckon people who like a bunch of their singles should give them a 3 not a 2
not me though, I’ll be giving them a 2

I think there’s a massive double standard going on here compared to someone like, say, Interpol (two good albums and loads of tosh). (not to mention Ash destroy them as a singles band) But I guess wait and see the score, idk

3 for me. While this might be true:

Weezer are far better at playing said bangers. The paradox at the heart of Ash is that their charm derived from the same thing that meant they couldn’t sustain how big they got at their peak: Tim’s a great songwriter, but they are not A Good Band.

That said, got to give them props for being one of the few bands to move almost all the way up the Reading festival poster (pretty sure they sub-headlined in the 90s/early 00s), then all the way down again, without sacking it off.

1977 is definitely the ‘cool’ answer but Free All Angels was unavoidable and massive and a huge part of my formative years so it’s got to be that for me.

And the intro is Place Your Hands by Reef.

some fun songs. Trailer EP is solid. Uncle Pat is great.

embarrassingly treated like gods by the aging NI music establishment because our list of ‘greats’ is fairly short so they need to venerate whoever they can. (one of the reasons i find music journalism that focuses solely on NI rather than Ireland as a whole tends to be so cringey)

3 i guess

Hm used to like them but kind of more as background tunes when playing Nintendo games than something I was really into.

Just skipping through some tracks now and Goldfinger, Let if Flow and Lost in you I remember liking and also still seem alright. I can’t really remember any of these songs from free all angels or nu clear sounds and they don’t seem very good.

I bought the Candy single and used to sit watching the video a lot :3

They should team up with Tom from Mcfly and see if they come up with any good songs.

Thanks for the prompt, was dithering over my score but Interpol are a good touchstone as both bands I only enjoyed the debut and about the same amount. Gave Interpol a 3 so will give Ash a 2, as Interpol had one song I liked and lots of meh after their debut, whereas most of Ash after theirs I disliked. Also enjoyed Interpol live more (though largely for the comedic amount of sweat that was sloshing about the room every time the one with the lopsided hair jerked his head).
