Just to get in there and say if you haven’t read (or even better, listened to) the Beastie Boys Book yet then you really ought to.
I was a fan of Ill communication and Paul’s Boutique without ever having explored any further but the book made me absolutely fall in love with them as people and artists.
Would be 5/5 if it were just Paul, Check and Ill, but the first album’s pretty cheesy rubbish and everything from Hello Nasty onwards is a bit forgettable.
Easy 5 from me. Can’t think of any other bands who can try their hands at so many genres in a single album and it still sound coherent. As above, Beastie Boys Book is a brilliant read too - just a massive love letter to New York and its music scene.
Firm 4. I like them, I really really like them, but I don’t quite love them. I even feel that I should love them… not entirely sure why they’ve never quite made it into my inner-pantheon.
The Negotiation Limerick File is their best track.
I’m old enough to remember the utter fear across the UK that these 3 young boys caused! The press went crazy!
Volkswagen car owners have probably never recovered.
The part of the “listen all of y’all it’s a sabotage” breakdown into the “IIIIIIIII can’t stand it…” is one of my top 5 bits in any music, ever.
I’ve given them a four, but that’s feeling a bit harsh, might revise. They are great characters, their book is one of the best music books ever produced, Grand Royal was top fun, they’ve made some all time classic songs…it’s just that all their records feel about twenty minutes too long, and it’s rare I’ll listen to one all the way through instead of cherry picking a few tracks. Hmmmm.
I’ve given them a 4. Paul’s Boutique is fucking brilliant, and Hello Nasty came out when I was about 14 and was the album that really got me into music that wasn’t britpop so I have a huge soft spot for it.
Also, “like a bottle of chateau neuf du pape, I’m fine like wine when I start to rap” is one of the most gloriously silly lyrics of all time.
