Oh shit, I’ve just realised I think I might be too late to the party

2 / 5 from me. Tried a few times and can’t get down with any of it. Don’t like the beats, don’t like the flows, don’t like the lyrics. Usual caveat that this is very subjective and usually just means that I haven’t found a way into it yet.

In general there’s very little hop hop that’s come out of NYC that I like. Interesting thinking about why that might be but never really came to much of a conclusion. NYC-ers have a bad attitude in general, that’s the only thing I can think of. I walked past Marcy Houses this morning, where Jay Z grew up, and past the big Biggie Smalls mural in Bed-Stuy as well. Weird how none of that has clicked, whereas there’s loads I like from Houston, Cali etc.

let me know any time you want to talk about non NY raps :call_me_hand:

Hah! Think I’m the other way round! Always been more partial to NY hip hop to Cali hip hop. Not sure why, just seems to have shaken out that way.

'Cos it’s better. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I do have a theory about why East Coast hip hop had a broader appeal in the UK though. In the early days anyway. I think it’s linked to climate, lack of car culture, amongst other things.

I also fell very much in love with the more laidback style of hip hop pioneered by the likes of De La Soul etc. So that really resonated with me.

they were so fun too, rewatching the videos and smiling so much at how weird and funny they are.

My favourite BB lyric

Pass me the scalpel, I’ll make an incision
I’ll cut off the part of your brain that does the bitching
Put it in formaldehyde and put it in the shelf
And you can show it to your friends and say “that’s my old self”

Their videos are amazing. The Criterion collection put out a compilation of all of them that I used to watch all the time in the pre YouTube days. Used to cheer me up every time I felt a bit down. Basically introduced the world to Spike Jonze too

absurd amount of time to wait for a song to start in a music video

Since the thread started and I worked my way to Ill Communication, I haven’t really listened to much else. Bloody hell, it’s even better than I remember!
Should have gone with a 5.
