Not to pre-empt the whole thread, but Beth/Rest hate is for cowards

I fucking hate every note of his shitty, boring music. I do not understand why anyone gives him the time of day and people should throw bottles of piss at him if he even tries to get on a stage. The tedious wanker.

I’d rather listen to Pearl Jam and RHCP perform an improvised live jazz funk opera.

Enjoy your thread.

Oh. 1 in case that wasn’t clear.

I think he/they is/are ace. Continually evolving and still always excellent. It’s a 5, Clive

One of the best live shows ive been to, too

Interested to hear where he/they goes/go next

Beth/Rest is the best song of the 80’s

I probably wouldn’t have voted for it anyway but The Wolves.waa.definitely a single it had a video and everything

Imagine yer man Justin Vernon walks out to a sold out crowd at Wembley and

Does yer man also go by they? Missed that!

First two albums are brilliant. Very much diminishing returns since then. I like that he’s going in interesting directions, I just think the albums haven’t been as strong and interesting as they should be.

22 a million is a REALLY good album imo, quietly one of the best of the decade. Really earned my respect seeing him live on that tour - those songs have no right to be so good live, but he made them so

No! Im referring to the band

Listed under ‘promotional videos’ but not ‘singles’, I’m in the clear!

First two records are good, oddly never listened to 22… or the other one for some reason. Can’t decide between a stingy 3 or a generous 4. This is the best thing he’s been involved in, obviously:

For Emma, Forever Ago still completely stands up as a classic, it’s a wonderfully written and atmospheric singular piece. For as ubiquitous Skinny Love became and covered by every wank and their dog at every open mic night for the rest of time, there’s a very good reason for how far that song has reached. I love moments like the double whammy of Creature Fear bleeding into Team, or how pained The Wolves is.

And that’s about as far my interest goes. I enjoyed the Blood Bank EP and the direction it promised, the self titled was good in parts with Holocene being the obvious standout and Beth/Rest obviously being the outlier, but everything since has been self indulgent boring twaddle really.

Annoyingly I got into him just after he toured the first album but they was good on the self titled tour. The next time at HAVEN festival has to be one of the most drab things I’ve ever witnessed.

So a 3 seems fair on reflection

Oh lol right

Gonna elaborate more here - the show I saw was a headline show on a festival main stage too, in an extremely heavy downpour - so heavy the show had to be stopped for 20 minutes. In those conditions, he opened by playing half the album in sequence - no “hits” - and the crowd was still rapt.

Most people hung around in the rain during the stoppage and were rewarded with an “encore” of Skinny Love and Beth/Rest. Probably one of my favourite shows ever tbh.

I’ll probably end up giving him a 4 because the first album isn’t for me and I’m not sold on the latest one either, but the middle pair are so strong.

Always found his working relationship with James Blake quite interesting given they’ve followed basically the same career path
