:'D amazing

Hold It Against Me is a really underrated late Britney oeuvre banger

Voted for three because it was the first song of hers that popped into my head after reading the thread title. I do have a soft spot for ā€˜Everytime’ though I think it’s a genuinely great ballad

I wonder if Beyonce’s score was hit a little by Lemonade not being on Spotify for so long? Probably her album with the most crossover appeal to a bunch of music nerds.

It was only eventually added during the HGWTR voting period I think? The Beyonce management team obvs watching the thread with concern - a late bid to boost those all important DiS rankings?

Gave her a 3 - some great bops and her show last year was pretty entertaining.

Pretty shocking that she’s still under conservatorship. Says a lot about how the music industry views female pop artists as nothing more than cash pinatas

Bad Blood is pish but the rest, unhhhhh, inject it into my veins.

Blank fucking Space!!! (Actually it has always reminded me of Piece of Me in its female pop star skewering of their press coverage.)

Fuck I can’t get the last one

With you on Bad Blood tbf. I hated Taylor right up until Style which I love with the fire of a thousand suns and it turned me round on her earlier stuff as well

Okay, speaking as a mod here, it is Bam, it’s totally cool, and up until this point…

I don’t think you said anything untoward or out of order in this thread. You don’t like Britney (or it seems most ā€˜manufactured’ pop, you explained why and engaged with others.

That second post I quoted is not engaging properly though, and I’ve been mulling over stepping in for an hour or two now. It’s glib, completely dismissive of an entire genre that you don’t like, doesn’t actually offer any clue about what you consider ā€˜good music’ to be and is to be honest a rhetorical question - you know there’s people on the boards with similar tastes to you. All you’re doing is throwing your weight around because… well… I can’t tell. And that’s the problem.

Similarly, this one…

Completely misrepresents the thread up till that point. It was mostly full of people saying they were giving Britney 2s, 3 and a few 4s. Barely anyone went straight for a five, and no-one did it ā€œjust becauseā€.

You’re completely entitled to your views in these threads, but you’re not entitled to misrepresent or dismiss others, and you’re not entitled to come in and glibly dismiss the entire topic obliquely as you did in that first post I’ve called out. Engage with others’ views respectfully and they’ll treat you with respect, even if you disagree, but the reason people are responding the way they are at the moment is because they’re reflecting your own attitude back to you.

If you want to discuss further, then I’ll happily do it in a separate thread or in a PM, but in the interests of not taking the thread completely off topic I’d rather not do it here.

First time I’ve really wanted to go to half marks. She’s not a 4 for me, but deserves more than a mid-weight 3. She’s one of the first pop artists that made me appreciate pop bangers for what they are and her impact round about the turn of the century was massive.

I’m afraid you’re going to have to hand in your teapot.

I don’t really have an opinion on Britney. ā€œHit Meā€¦ā€ came out when I was 22, so there was no way I was ever going to engage with that at the height of my musical snobbery. And she doesn’t have that musical legacy, to me, the makes me want to rediscover her work.

I wouldn’t turn Toxic off if it came on the radio, but at the same time, I wouldn’t actively seek to play it.

I guess I am at that age where my ā€œmassive pop bangersā€ come from the 80s. So I find it difficult to engage in critical appraisal of your Britneys, Taylors and Beyonces.

Going for a 2, because I don’t hate her work, but I also have no love for it either.

What 80s pop would you like to see come up?

gave her and stevie wonder both 4. both have records that i really like but not been that deep with either

Crikey, that’s put me on the spot. I’m a massive a-ha fan, so I guess they’d be my go-to. Be interesting to see where the board stand on the big players of the era like Duran Duran, Wham, Pet Shop Boys, etc.
