Yeah even though Lennon engaged in that sort of thing himself I’ve always thought Run For Your Life is too deliberately over the top to be earnest and really more of a murder ballad type thing - I guess it’s still uncomfortable hearing it from someone like him but I don’t think it’s a ā€˜the mask has slipped’ moment

Deserves at least a 4 for the song Atlantic City tbh.

Need to round the Big Dogs up to 6 and have Joni and Paul Simon in there.

Gonna retract my vote because Joni’s not there.

You know that Lennon lifted that line (ā€œI’d rather see you deadā€¦ā€) wholesale from an Elvis song, right?

thread seems a bit too genial tbh, so i would like to ask a question. why is bruce springsteen writing about working class experience while being a millionaire fine, but beyonce promoting working class POC like the black panthers while being rich makes her a hypocrite. and in fact led to a bit of a struggle sesh in her thread. what could be the difference. it is a mystery.

Was more than one poster saying this?

it doesn’t really matter, because either way her thread got derailed while bruce’s is bobbing along just fine and is mostly full of praise/cautious ā€œnot for meā€ stuff at worst, so imo it’s unfair to the beyonce fans here, idk leaves a bad taste in the mouth

Every one of these threads got derailed on exactly the same lines for weeks tbf. Not that that makes it OK but it wasn’t beyonce specific and it’s better that it has now stopped

I don’t think that raking it up is going to be any help to either thread

. Bruce shouldn’t be a millionaire, makes him a dickhead as a person
. All pop music is shit and I don’t respect people who don’t write their own songs or play instruments

that’s true, and i like both BS and BK just fine, but there’s been no talk of problematic class tourism re bruce afaik so far, whereas the criticism of beyonce was very much about how her being rich and whatever meant she couldn’t speak to a certain experience of poverty/class/race.

(this is the only thread i’m going to cause a mild fuss in, don’t worry, i’m just peeved on behalf of our bey fans)

People apply different standards to things they like

nobody writes their own songs because producers alone supply loads of suggested changes and stuff like that during the recording process, and bruce has a team of people sitting in as session musicians who come up with parts he gets the credit for, it’s a bollocks argument is that

(again i like both just fine, we just need to establish this)

Popstars are akin to actors, they have their lines written for them and then perform them, you don’t credit the actor with the story.

Plenty of people write the vast majority of their own material and only allow minimal changes to melody, structure, lyrical content etc

Please don’t generalise when you know it was literally one person making those arguments in that thread. It’s a bit disingenuous

also his lyrics have in the past been vague enough that his songs have been co-opted by republican hardliners in america whereas you won’t find pro-life activists using ā€œindependent womanā€ or something as entrance music for their convention speeches. kinda seems like he could use a songwriting team to clarify his ideas imo.
