I really need to listen to more Dolly but that discography is DAUNTING. got into country properly in the last handful of years after 30+ years of being a hater. the song baby im burning that @Gert posted is the best song ive heard in a while so maybe ill start with that album and work backwards.

I’m sure on balance Dolly is a force for good in the world but I thought someone should offer an alternative take on the Dolly is a Perfect Queen narrative. No one is perfect! It’s actually a really good article, a fan really wrestling with Dolly and her legacy.

Didn’t know much Dolly Parton outside Jolene and 9 to 5, but listened to the Blue Smoke greatest hits last night and enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. Nice to get a pleasant surprise there.

Hadn’t listened to any of her albums but Jolene seems like a very good entry-point album for country newbies like myself. Probably no coincidence that it has her 2 best singles on it.

Edit: also at 10 songs in 24 minutes it makes Reign in Blood look like a bloated prog-rock mess

I will award Dolly Parton a 4

I hold the totally original and not previously mentioned opinion that Jolene is a very, very excellent song. And she seems to be the absolute best.

The film Dumplin’ wouldn’t exist without her either, and I love that film - another wholly original opinion which hasn’t been mentioned yet.

Unrelated:

I’m going to tweet the Dessner’s and get them donating books to under-privileged children by the lorry-load for when The National HGATR comes round again.
