She was pigeonholed to be just a pretty face with a great voice on Porter Wagoner’s country program for years and years. Porter never wanted her to leave and being a woman in country music at the time, she didn’t have many options for opting out.
Yet she still had the wear with all to stand out on her own, while many in the industry said she would never make it. And while Porter was domineering in trying to hold her back, she still found it within herself to write “I Will Always Love You” for him.
A genuine force for good in a completely male dominated industry at the time (with the exception of the Carter Family, Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn, some others).
Absolutely revered as someone who grew up from a poor background and did it her own way from the bottom up. She deserves all the absolute praise in the world.
