Baffling how popular he is.
Terrible moany nonsense.

No that’s how you start a thread

Abstain/5. Have absolutely no opinion. I have always, for some strange reason, got Elliot Smith & Nick Drake mixed up :man_facepalming:

I figured it wouldn’t be a popular take.

Gone with Needle in the Hay but my favourite of his is Junk Bond Trader (or whatever the really good one near the start of Figure 8 is).

I’ve given him a 4 because I have all his stuff and I enjoy his music a lot but it’s not really that amazing for me that it deserves a 5.

Nah it isn’t

Not sure that’s exactly strange TBH. Regardless of how similar their music actually is side by side, there are loads of parallels to their style and stuff, I think. Certainly if you’re not deep into the genre?

I don’t get them mixed up, but when I saw this was the new HGATR, the comment I planned was something like “Much like Nick Drake, I’ve tried and tried to get into him, but it’s never worked. I think I just don’t like sensitive singer songwriters all that much”, so you’re not the only one who at least sees the link.

Please do write more. His appeal
Is baffling to me, but I’d like to understand why people love him so.

always get him mixed up with ryan adams

Me too. Saying that he’s OK 3/5

4 perhaps? Bit too self-pitying to be top tier, but few have made stuff that sad sound so pretty. Really unique songwriter in how he put stuff together, and an underrated guitarist too.

Can’t pick between Either/Or and XO for best album. Former is the perfection of his lo-fi stuff; latter is the perfection of his major label stuff. Both essential. The rest are varying degrees of patchy but well worth owning because there’s genius spread throughout.

Other way round but yeh.

I meant Either/Or! Monday morning ain’t it (have edited my original post)
