well there’s one line in one track where he goes “Beating motherfuckers like Ike beat Tina” and it really puts me off

honestly recommend this whole interview but tyler nails this at the point I’ve linked this at (also talks about getting dissed by him)

What’s the name of that video that’s been posted a few times on here? Brief description:

  • woman reading some kind of beat poetry
  • man playing drums
  • it’s set on a river in America, possibly in the 90s

not embarrassing, it’s a great song

Aye, watched the whole thing the other day and found it weirdly touching.

Yeah – totally remember this as well and how off it felt. Like long opinion pieces in broadsheet newspapers exploring rhyme structure and imploring people to look beyond the surface level violence to see the biting social commentary in his lyrics. Can’t possibly think why his lyrics was singled out for this type of treatment and literally no other rapper’s were.

In fairness to Eminem, remember him rubbishing any claims that he was the greatest rapper ever in interviews and constantly boosting Redman when he was asked the question, which was obviously both great and correct.

Heres the thing right. The lyrics in Biggies music very much speaks of the culture of which he was raised and is a very vivid insight to that world. It never came across as particularly hateful

I think you have to take this, not exactly with a pinch of salt, but with some empathy to the world he grew up and lived in.

yeah I really like a lot of the tracks but stuff like gimme the loot is definitely hateful and revelling in it

Can’t deny that Stan is a great track

Stan is fantastic storytelling. Probably the best story telling in a hit song ever?

Didn’t Seamus Heaney defend/champion him as well?

I know this is becoming a very other rapper centric thread but as far as narrative story telling hip hop tracks go…
