In addition to the above article…
They’re basically the perfect storm of art-rock, electronica, dance, and an emotive pop sensibility. Cerebral in form and lyrical content, whilst also massively danceable and bags of fun. They make me feel like a teen again where music matters more than anything. Thought I’d lost that feeling in my 20s but the excitement in the run up to the last 2 albums took me back to those days.
They’ve got that vintage Radiohead thing going on where I can make an argument for almost any track being my fave on a given day, and relegating tracks as good as The Mariana and Breadwinner to a cheeky little post-album EP.
Get To Heaven is my personal pinnacle. An album full of bangers where the subject matter is a nuanced examination of extremism of all forms. They’re a positive voice to a young fanbase in a way which feels rare for what is ostensibly a generic white male 4-piece guitar band.
Jonathan Higgs clearly has a wildly polarising voice but it’s an all-timer for me. We’re gonna see a fair bit of vitriol in here for him and the music. Seem to be a band you can’t just be ambivalent towards and really bring out the vitriol. Probably testament to them in some way that they feel important enough to be hated.
Like Elbow, they also have the rare property of being a band my wife and I both love. Their GTH era outdoor gig at Somerset House is one of my favourite musical memories.
Looking forward to a score in the 2s
