She’s the best. Idler Wheel is one of my all time favourites - had the CD in the car for the last 3 years and it’s very rarely not in the player.

Some of my picks from that album for the less familiar:

I didn’t know about this. What’s the story? Record company didn’t like Jon Brion’s production?

Her version of Across the Universe def better than the original.

Yup, she recorded the album with him, and then submitted it to the record label and they rejected it because it didn’t sound ā€˜commercial’ enough I think. So she was told to go away and do it again with a different producer.

I’m a big JB fan so need to track that down.

Hmmmmmmm.

Check out the two songs I posted above. It’s not her most commercial stuff but it’s brilliant.

For balance I only listened to her because of the FTBC hype and thought it absolutely lived up to it. Do think it was quite a brave album, particularly with the instrumental/production choices and the lyrical content, particularly in the fall out from the #MeToo movement, all backed up with some really great songs. It’s not necessarily an album I return to loads for those reasons, still think it’s brilliant though.

Will go 4 on that basis alone.

Many of the Jon Brion versions seem to be on youtube; just search for ā€œunreleased versionā€.

At a pinch, I’d probably say this is my fave track:

Honestly no idea, have never been able to get into her but then I’ve only heard a couple tracks, abstain for now

Gigantic 5, even though Idler Wheel is the only one I really know (and will likely be the last CD I that listened to so often that it broke). Listened to FTBC a couple of times and enjoyed it but just made me want to go back and listen to the ā€œheeeeeeeey-hey-EY-hey-EYā€ bit on Every Single Night over and over again.

I really, really liked Fetch the Bolt Cutters, but like @zanimos said above I didn’t feel myself drawn to go back to it after the initial listening period. I always meant to go back to the earlier records but for that reason I never have. Tough to vote, because I suspect she’s really good but I don’t really know enough to be sure. 3 based in what I do know (feel that might be a bit harsh)

a rare 1 from me. i listened to the most recent one after all the rave reviews and found it fucking annoying. generally quite interested in anything that gives me such a strong reaction. it’s almost like i disagree with the whole aesthetic, the whole sensibility. really sounds quite american and in a weird way quite posh (very subjective obviously), hate that fancy show-off fast piano playing, hate that it sounds very thought through and organized into different distinct sections. actually contains a lot of the things that i hate about ā€˜pitchfork-beloved indie’ in general. i kind of think that people who are into this kind of thing must be looking for a totally different thing out of music than i am, it’s almost directly opposed to the things i like about music, deliberately does the opposite of what i want it to do. i say this meaning it very subjectively, not that my taste is somehow superior to anything else. though i sometimes wonder about the values this kind of sound is indicative of.

but i only listened to the first half of the album and only listened to it once, so i’m not exactly talking about something i know much about. might give it another crack and see if i’m in a better mood.

I can’t believe there are only 35 replies to this thread given how much love her last album got on here.

I haven’t listened to any of her music except for Criminal on a 90s playlist which absolutely slaps.

An impulsive 4/5

I like some of the stuff I’ve heard but I’m not keen on songs where it seems like there are too many lyrics crammed in. She’s an artist I’ve always meant to check out properly but never quite got round to really investigating.

I reckon the How Not Good Are They Really world cup has overshadowed it tbh.

I feel this exact way about 90s Manics songs. Too many words! It’s like listening to sixth formers read out an essay they wrote over a backing track

Alongside Joanna Newsom, she’s the most consistent and interesting female artist of the past 20+ years. She may not be the most prolific but everything she’s done oozes quality, her songwriting is astounding, she’s ridiculously talented as a musician (child prodigy) and the fact she’s just released her best album - just shades The Idler Wheel… - 25 years into her career is quite astounding.

My finger slipped and I pressed 4, but it is an easy 5. (Is it possible to change my vote?)

Yeah you can change it at any point before the vote closes
