You know Frank Sinatra? He’s dead.

Bit of a legend. My mum and dad love him. This is pretty unchartered territory for me as a critic though. He’s as American a national treasure as apple pie so I’ll give him 3.141/5

New York, New York is to me what Don’t Stop Me Now (and others) is to @anon19035908. Absolutely sets my teeth on edge.

1/5 feels harsh though so I’ve gone with 2/5.

4/5 grew up on the sounds of frank. my dads all time fav singer. capitol years frank ftw.

his discography is kind of a mess so if im in the mood i usually reach for ‘wee small hours’ or any of the ‘songs for…’ or if i want some pep i’ll go for ‘strangers in the night.’

ill probably never get sick of summer wind

Got no time for crooning

Frank has a whole world of songs better than NYNY.

Reflexive 1/5 because I hate, hate, HATE all that crooner shite where they’re all singing different versions of the same five fucking songs for their entire career.

I should bloody well hope so!

In all seriousness: he clearly has a great voice, lots of people love him and I don’t want to rag on him, but it’s not for me.

2? I dunno, I get it but I don’t love it.

in the wee small hours is a really nice melancholy jazz record
can’t imagine ever wanting to listen to his other stuff though, one album is enough for me.
3 i guess

Yeah, this. Just the most trite form of music.

Find it almost impossible to objectively judge - it’s pretty much classical music at this point. Would never ever out a Frank Sinatra record on, but appreciate that he was obviously a massively talented individual. On the few occasions I’ve found myself in a bar where someone is doing crooner stuff I’ve always found it enjoyable enough in an anachronistic kinda way, but meh?

3 - the score of neutrality.

A strange one as he and his voice are so familiar from films, books and musicians talking about his influence but I would never choose to listen to him. Deserves points for his influence on Scott Walker, at least. Find it difficult to disentangle what he did from all the really dull crooners who followed him, and who tend to pop up on variety shows and the like.

5/5; The Avalanches’ best song, and maybe the most infectious earworm ever?

I’ll go to bat here and say that I fucking love Frank. Him and Dean Martin, and the rest of the crooners that came after can fuck off. An amazing, rich, expressive voice and a fascinating, complex character. The Way You Look Tonight was the first dance at our wedding and we listen to a lot of Frank together. 5/5.
