I knew it was slang from the Vietnam war but don’t think I ever knew what it actually meant…(or if I did I’ve forgotten again as I’m old

Also means fake/dodgy/counterfeit/fraudulent. I’ve never checked to see which meaning the band had in mind!

The group still needed a name, so MacKaye chose the word “fugazi” (which means “false or inauthentic”) from Mark Baker’s Nam, a compilation of stories of Vietnam War veterans, in there being a slang backronym for “Fucked Up, Got Ambushed, Zipped In [a body bag]”

Ahhh, i heard it on an interview with canty where he was talking about other examples of the name (a diner apparently) and he mentioned the acronym as the meaning of the word.
