Congrats on reaching 300 of these excellent threads!

Probably love New Zero Kaneda most if I’m honest.

Once again, thank you to everyone who has voted and posted in these threads and helped us get to this latest milestone

Let’s all meet up in HGATR 300!

HGATR is on fire
And Funkhouser’s at the wheel

Hated these guys back when they first appeared.

Just seemed like the most pretentious thing but I don’t think I ever actually listened to them I think it was just that I was reading Melody Maker at the time (the NME having pissed me off too many times with their dismissal of bands I liked) and MM really hated Godspeed it seemed.

Mates of mine were really into them but then they were really into other bands that weren’t really for me.

When I first started working for my company there were a bunch of us grads and one of the guys I didn’t like much. Seemed a bit odd. Sure enough we soon became huge friends. Turned out he was into music and shit like me and also deeply not into ‘progressing’ in the company and loathed having to put on a suit too. We got together in a band and stuff. He was into that sort of music and somehow made it sound interesting and different.

He got me into a lot of more interesting music TBH like Sonic Youth and Trail of Dead as previously I’d been just sort of flailing on the tail end of Britpop, aware I didn’t really have interest in more music like that even if I did still like the stuff I liked but equally I didn’t know what I did want to really dig into. (Was a period where I listened to Xfm a lot and bought loads of singles on Mondays at Our Price in Holloway.)

At the same time, the two of us realised we had decent enough wages to buy MiniDiscs which then allowed us to share loads more music. And so I got into Godspeed and really enjoyed that first album and the EP. I never got around to listening to their other stuff until more recently but I recall being blown away by how good they were at the NBC ATP.

Great band. Probably still actually pretentious as fuck but I am now the sort of guy who’s cool with that. Thank you.

Think I’ve only properly listened to LYSF but it’s a very powerful record, happy to throw them a 4.

Find this quite funny

Spoken like a true Disser :grinning::+1:

Easy 5 and in my top 3 bands of all time.

Difficult to choose between a 4 and 5. If we’re honest the last 4 albums are pretty rubbish. First three and the slow riot EP are amazing. Astonishing live as well but have to be up for it.

Lift yr skinny fists is an absolutely classic album and in my top 5 all time

Could this be an Aretha botherer?

I’m not sure, I don’t think so purely cause the vote count will be much higher. Aretha only had 80 or so votes, this one could nearly double that.

Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada is their best recod, shame it’s not eligible for the album poll. If we’d had a singles poll (ha!) it’d be Moyà or the Sad Mafioso section* of East Hastings. Love the care they take over packaging with all the little inserts and crushed coins, etc. At their best they are fantastic, a brilliant, elemental, melding of beauty and power, but at their worst they can be quite dull and noodlesome. I know it’s a revered record, but LYSF is the worst culprit for this. It just goes on and on and on, and it’s probably the album of theirs I reach for least, apart from the last few, which unfortunately don’t exist. Think part of the reason I favour New Riot is its conciseness (yeah, I just called a record that only has two tracks but is still half an hour long ‘concise’, what are you going to do about it?). They’re a 5 or a 2 depending on what album I’m listening to, but sitting here and thinking about the shimmering violent beauty of Moya I’m plumping for a slightly generous four.

*just put proper track markers on your records, eh?

Asunder is one of my favourite Godspeed albums……

My feeling is no. Mogwai weighed in at 4.24 and whilst GYBE! might go higher, I wouldn’t think they’re nearly half a point better liked than them.

Anyways, let’s see what else… It was Godspeed You! Black Emperor…There was no band like them, in the whole world, like Godspeed You! Black Emperor when I was a youngster. No band in the world like them, and it was so fabulous. Now they’ve shrunk down to almost nothing, you see. And, uh, I still remember in my mind how things used to be, and uh, you know, I feel very bad.

(Listening to those early albums even now I still get a huge thrill from them. Actually think that their recent stuff is mostly pretty decent, but I don’t find them mind-blowing in the way those first records hit me as a youngster.)
