Get the feeling that they might get a slight kicking here but I think they’ve more than enough gold to justify a 5. Demon Days was a really formative record for me and I’ll always love it to bits

Lots of stuff that doesn’t exist on the singles poll mind

Quite like the idea of what they do but never heard anything by them that wasn’t considerably less than the sum of its parts. Probably going to abstain but will check out some stuff that gets love in here in case I can be converted.

I enjoyed the first couple of albums but, much like life in general, the whole thing has become less fun as it goes on. It seems like the cartoon band idea and the emphasis on the visuals have faded into the background, and that Gorillaz is much more Damon Albarn than it is Jamie Hewlett these days. There’s always at least a couple of good tunes on each album, but for me at least they’ve lost a bit of the spark that made them stand out to begin with. Probably a 3? Maybe a 2 if I’m in a bad mood.

Was absolutely obsessed with Demon Days when it came out. Loved the mythology of the band as well, which seems to have become less important and well formed as time’s gone on, which is a shame. Think it’s been diminishing returns ever since Demon Days but always enjoy a handful of tracks off each subsequent release.

Andre 3000’s bit in this is incredible

This is a banger as well

Genuinely had no idea they were a going concern. Fair play to them.

4 probably. Saw them at the Opera House for MIF and were really good. Didn’t like the no standing policy at the time these days probably don’t mind it so much.

They were excellent at Glastonbury becoming more and more convinced it is one of the best sets ever. Why didn’t Snoop Dogg do his actual song at the start? Mark E Smith twiddling Mick Jones amp knobs and Paul Simonon looking like he was going to lamp Smith then Lou Reed coming on straight after. It does contain one of the most excruciating moments I’ve ever seen, Albarn begging people to sing Pirate Jets was proper uncomfortable (I have definitely typed this paragraph out about 20 times in different thread but, look):

Not listened that much to them after Plastic Beach that Fall LP was alright and they have done some alright songs since, that one with Peter Hook from last year was surprisingly good.

Always thought the first Gorillaz album felt very close to Blur’s b-sides.

They’re a 4 from me but mainly for the good times of the early albums.

Very very good singles band. Never heard an album that didn’t leave me wanting something more substantial around midway through. But…

Clint Eastwood
Feel Good Inc
Dirty Harry
Dare
Stylo
Melancholy Hill
Tranz…

…are all grand. I’m generally fairly well disposed towards Damon Albarn too - seems like he is probably a good egg, although maybe a bit of a Wally from time to time. Glad he exists. Same with Gorillaz.

Generous 4

Always forget about how good this song was, think it got overplayed at the time but it’s huge

Best track is a toss up between On Melancholy Hill and El Manana for me. Both really beautiful tracks. Tonnes of stuff from the first 3 records that are on a par though.

Just noticed this isn’t in the list (guessing it was never a single) but another contender for favourite track, really incredible

Woah, I didn’t realise they’d released more than 1 album since The Fall! I only know the first 4 albums

Obviously not Albarn’s best project but they’re a 4 for me. Lots of enjoyable songs; both songs with Little Dragon on Plastic Beach are immense.

I don’t really have much of substance to say about them, though.

Not a fan. 2/5

That didn’t look uncomfortable to me, got an okay response from the crowd?

Not listened to anything after Plastic Beach.

But I was obsessed with the S/T album as a kid. Utterly bewitched by the music videos. Very strong link there.

But turns out I think that Think Tank is better than s/t now. And they both feel similar.

Dislike Demon Days bar the singles and Plastic Beach is a lot of filler around some bangers.

So yeah, brilliant singles, middling albums, but very good over all.

A 4. A mild 4.

Introduced me to Little Dragon too.

(don’t tell anyone but I prefer Gorillaz to Blur)

The post-Plastic Beach stuff isn’t really my bag but everything up and including it is ace. Maybe a slightly generous 4
