One of those bands that I like in very small doses (eg when an individual song comes on the radio), but would never go and see play live as I don’t really feel the need to spend an evening surrounded by Gen X men who ‘snort’ and ‘guffaw’.

First became aware of them when someone in byker grove was looking at a bunch of bootleg tapes in a car boot, picked one up and said ‘half man half biscuit - they’re good them!’

No idea why thats stuck with me.

Very big on John Peel and amongst 45-55 men who grew up on early-80s role playing games and Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, so have never really cut through to a wider audience.

Kind of need to be in the right mood to listen to them and there’s a fair few songs I can’t get on with but the good stuff is very good.

Probably Back In The DHSS I’d say. Their sound doesn’t change so if you don’t like that, they’re probably not for you.

It’s a 5 for me, Nigel.

It’s strange to me how humour in music so rarely works. I’m sure some will say HMHB are proof of that but to me they’re the exception that proves the rule. They nail a particularly British sense of humour that both makes them so great and also closes them off to the rest of the world.

For a band whose sound has never really changed over the span of more than a dozen albums, it’s remarkable I haven’t got bored of them yet.

Big fan of Urge for Offal but Creative Hub fell a bit flat for me. Surprised that so many people here rate it, I’ll have to give it another go. Looking forward to sinking my teeth into the new one
