None of this ‘oh I’m gonna abstain I’ve never heard all of their studio albums etc’ nonsense with this one either. Everybody knows at least 5 songs on that list, live a little.

What are the 5 I should know?

I’m sure I’ll have heard some but not a clue TBH. Just a name I associate with 80s naffness

Think I only know maneater

Just any 5, they’re really quite famous.

Do you like it?

When did the Hall and Oates revival start? I feel like, as a teenager growing up in the mid-late 90s they were almost entirely absent. So yeah, partridgeshrug.gif/5 (abstain)

See also: the popularity of ‘Africa’ by Toto.

And finally: Nelly Furtado’s ‘Maneater’ >>> Hall & Oates’ ‘Maneater’

Not really, dont hate it though

I think when Yacht Rock was a thing maybe? So sort of late 00s? Dunno, like you they weren’t a thing when I was growing up.

I wonder this as well. I’m old enough to remember Maneater and the other one being hits (sorry Funky, no way I know five off that list). After that, on the off chance anyone thought of them at all, they were generally viewed as corny cheese and over-slick and too smooth rubbish but in the last few years people seem to have decided they were actually good. Not having it.

They might be great. I’ll have a listen but the label they have is very much mild strength Tesco cheddar, yeah.

Not even sure what this is. Mystery Jets?

Mrs W likes them. A couple of years ago I got her tickets to see them live - expecting her to take a friend.

I ended up getting dragged along and (as a self-confessed music snob) expected the worst.

It was unexpectedly joyous.

Hey, don’t push Oates over!

It was a YouTube parody thing

But it’s an actual thing

DiSer soup100 was a big fan IIRC

In the 80s they felt like one of those bands whose success in the U.S. was massive but barely made an impact in the UK or rest of Europe.

There was definitely a point at which a lot of previously considered naff 70s and 80s soft rock/mor seemed to suddenly become acclaimed or rediscovered. Not sure what drove that really; slightly baffling.

Anyway I dunno, 2 for Hall & Oats I guess. Pointless but harmless enough if that’s your thing.

Had no idea that was where it started. Thought it was just a random term people started using to mean 70s/80s soft rock or stuff influenced by that.

Edit - so was it this 2005 Online thing that actually caused the critical revival/rediscovery of these acts? Seems about right timeline wise.

Weekly reminder that ‘genre’ is a silly concept.
