Nothing to do with the music, but was lucky to work on the pre-order for Everything Ever Written and got to speak to Roddy and Rod a bunch of times. Really nice guys and all around a great bunch of GBOLs

Finding it really hard to choose in both these polls. Idlewild are a 5/5, loved them since I heard WIAISS on the radio aged about 13. That run of Captain, Hope Is Important, 100 Broken Windows and Remote Part is fucking brilliant. Also the band I’ve seen live the most (8 including once supporting Coldplay in Plymouth). Gonna change my single and album votes at least 3 more times I reckon.

I’d give everything up to and including 100 broken windows a 5, then everything past that point a 3. They just changed to the point that what I loved had largely gone.

Listening to Captain or Hope is Important, there’s nothing else in my music collection which so vividly transports me back to a particular place and timein my life.

A solid 3. So great once, now so bad, dreadful lyrics throughout, bit too earnest, but clearly lovely humans.

Never knowingly heard them, abstain/5.

The Remote Part is one of my all time favourite albums, never connected as much with the stuff before or after tbh.

Remember kerrang used to love “a modern way of letting go”.

Good band.

I love it. I can see why some people who were really into them before would lose interest around that point but it’s such a brilliant record.

Lad liked to repeat words to make rhymes didn’t he?

There are a few bands from around that era where I connected with just one of their albums, but that album still gets regularly listened to. Hefner is one and Idlewild are another. Big fan of 100 Broken Windows, quite like the other stuff I’ve heard of theirs. It’s a 3.7(ish) rounded to a 4.

Couple of good albums, seem like nice enough guys. Haven’t released anything of interest in nearly 20 years. Slightly generous 3

It’s a 4 for me. Captain through to Remote Part are all top records and some of my most played in my teens, what came after is more variable bit still has its moments. Went completely rotten live for a few years, but seem to have found their love for what they do again now.

Meh. They’re good, but I’m not going out of my way to listen to them.

Quite enjoyed his decision to repeat verses in their entirety early on as well.

“Roddy, we need a second verse to this one.”
“Ah, fuck… Just use the vocal line from the one I’ve already done again.”

  1. Liked the first 3 albums, lost interest after that. Never saw them either so don’t know if they’re good live
