Has some lovely tunes

Haven’t really checked his stuff since kiss each other clean. 3.5/5 but could be swayed higher if the thread delivers some late career gems I’ve missed out on.

Iron - Essential for loads of things I use regularly: 5
Wine - Horrible, tastes shit and its very performative for wealthy folk: 1

One of my all time favs. Couldn’t really care if the quality dropped after kiss each other clean, or that they’ve been incredibly disappointing the times I’ve seen them. I have so many memories tied up in The Creek Drank The Cradle and Our Endless Numbered Days.

Does a good cover does Sam

Around the Well is well worth listening to.

Much prefer the stripped back I&W to the full band, but Walking Far from Home is lovely.

Thanks for putting them on the list, will be spending a lot of time listening to them this week.

Good music for listening to on a nighttime porch during a heatwave.

I only know the first two or three records. Seemed to have two songs: the sad fingerpicked slow ones and then a kinda jaunty groovy one. Loved the former, not always so much the latter.

Passing Afternoon is a beaut. About as good as songs get lyrically, not a wasted word and structured so perfectly.

He’s got a 5 for The Shepherd’s Dog which was played a LOT by my wife and I at one stage as a classic album to help us go to sleep.

I recall playing Kiss Each Other Clean a bit after but never really bothered with him after that. I seem to recall I took an interest after @colon_closed_bracket was bigging him up, possibly even put him on a mixtape or something.

Had a really good song amongst lots of decent ones, can’t remember what it was called. Gonna listen to a couple albums today. Think it’s a 3 but might be a 4.

One of those bands lots of people whose music taste I trust like and I keep meaning to listen to but haven’t yet.

Obviously will abstain

I’ve always loved this cover

They’re probably worth a 4/5 for those first two albums alone.

Our Endless Numbered Days is in my all time top 10, so it’s got to be a 5 really.

Loved the first record with calexico, in the reins. Nothing else of his has ever landed for me though.

One of those artists I’m recommended all the time and which has never clicked or come close to clicking. Kaiser Chiefs have more bangers.

Saw Calexico and Iron & Wine in Manchester about 15 years ago. Can’t remember why I had a ticket, but it was certainly the only time I’ve paid to see a band where I didn’t know anything by them. Was one of the most boring gigs I’ve ever been to, haven’t listened to a note by either since. Won’t be doing that again.

Remember getting Creek Drank… when it came out and realising that mine and Sub Pop’s tastes had diverged over the years. Just find him a bit dull, really. File under not for me.

I also saw the tour with Calexico for In The Reins, and it was tremendous, so he can get a two for that, even if it was Calexico doing most of the heavy lifting.

Been ages since I’ve heard any of his stuff.

Remember seeing him and Calaxico at The Forum maybe in the mid-00s. Liked his output then but couldn’t name a song of his nowadays.

One of those artists I liked a good bit for a short while (first 2 albums + In the Reins) but it’s been so long since I listened I can barely remember what he sounds like beyond the most general terms. Should re-listen before voting really.

Like the first 3 albums a lot and there are some very good EPs and stuff from this period as well. I’ve been meaning to listen to more of the Archive Series stuff too that’s been coming out recently from this era.

Kiss Each Other Clean was decent as well although it’s mainly all about the great opening and closing tracks - the stuff in between isn’t at quite the same level but it’s still all pretty decent.

I’ve unfortunately found his later releases a bit dull and unmemorable. I’m not sure what’s changed really but they’re lacking something.

Never seen him live which is a shame. Missed him doing a solo show here in 2010 which would have been great. Think I only knew The Shepherd’s Dog at the time but still.
