She is great. I like her.

5 for being on Stargate Universe.
Abstain for the music.

No idea. Heard one song and it was a straight up Prince ‘homage’ and was pretty great but I’ve never investigated further.

Fucking brilliant seen her 3 times and has amazing every including the Saturday night at Glastonbury 2011. Pulp, then Janelle Monae while eating a pizza and finally Big Boi absolutely stunning.

I’m going with a 4 purely because I just don’t know her stuff well enough. But what I do know I really like.

Obviously this raises the question of, “why the fuck don’t you listen to her stuff then?” and in part it’s that whenever I see her albums they are very long and hard to digest (see also Taylor Swift) but also I am actually not often in the mood for this sort of stuff. Dunno.

Anyway, it’s a 4 and you guys can just live with it x

Conflicted feelings on Janelle. Absolutely brilliant stage presence, loads of charisma, and I like the themes and the pomp around the albums, but on the other hand I’ve seen enough out of tune performances from her to think she’s actually not a good singer (though it’s well masked on record) and every one of her albums are more filler than killer.

She’s a 5 despite the fact I don’t go out of my way to listen to her studio albums. Live she is incredible. Proper superstar qualities that I’m surprised have not really come to full fruition. I saw her in 2014 at The Institute in Birmingham and that mummified ticker tape gig was bathed in glory.

I’m worried she’s blown it. Loved the first two albums (or the second and third, depending on your state of cosmic awareness), then had to wait years and years for Dirty Computer, which turned out to be a big disappointment, while she seems more interested in films than records now. Ten years ago she would have been an easy five, I think today she’s a three. If she drops a brilliant album next week then she’d go right back up again, but my fear is that she peaked musically some time ago.

The ArchAndroid is a wonderful record, find the other 2 a bit of a step down but still decent. Amazing live performer. 4 (for now)

Came here to post this. Janelle gets a 5 just for being part of the best run of bands I’ve ever seen, what an evening

I’m guessing that was Make Me Feel, but I think this is an amazing Prince style track on the same album

One of the best live shows I’ve seen. Went to see her at Glastonbury but I was so ill and had to miss half of it but luckily she was doing the MIF a few weeks after. Went to that and it was sensational. Every song sounds better live and she’s a master at playing in front of thousands but making it feel she is playing to everyone individually

Surprised people are down on Dirty Computer, that’s my favourite by quite a distance

Incredible albums, amazing performer, unbelievable live shows and stage presence, and she stands up for all the right things in life. Also, good actor and has been in excellent stuff. The singles are obviously great but I really enjoy the deeper album cuts too. The fact that all her albums (and the EP) continue one extended narrative too is all the more impressive. The Dirty Computer film is superb.

She’s very outspoken against all things racist/sexist/homophobic, and actively works to get good things done. If we’re going to mark people down for their politics I think it’s only right we can mark them up, too.

This is her first ever TV performance. Who else does this?

6 out of 5.

Probably opting out of the thread for fear I shit my own face off at the comments.

An easy 5 although still think Many Moons (and its video) is the best thing she ever did.

Went to her first gig outside of North America, at the Hoxton Bar and Kitchen, which is still one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to.

Deserves an 11/10 for this Halloween costume alone :star_struck::smiling_face_with_three_hearts::heart_eyes:

Gonna be late for work but hopefully I’ll be back later to give her the praise she deserves.

  1. Hugely talented and love a few tunes but hadn’t yet released an album that doesn’t tail off half way through (although I’m sure she has one in her).
