I’d employ an assistant.

Runner up in the prize draw gets to do it

Actually it would never get done. I started entering all the voter numbers once and got to about 12 before I realised I was wasting my life.

As tough as it is, I may as well…

HOOM > Ys > Divers > MEM

Can’t imagine MEM being my introduction to her music and rating it ahead of everything that followed.

Went for a 5 in the end, because I actually decided to listen to Only Skin and it made me cry, then listened to Emily and the ending of that made me cry, so figured it had to be a 5, because I couldn’t vote for any other numbers, and Ys might be intolerably good.

Got it on too (did Mender yesterday, so it made sense to move on). Want to go sot outside with that silly bright moon to listen.

Love the way the strings dart around Emily with the movement of a flock of birds. And… just, every word. All of them. ā€œIn bodies that don’t keep, dumbstruck with the sweetness of beingā€

Yeah thanks to everyone for a really lovely discussion. I’ve even changed my opinion upwards of at least one poster who I thought always had terrible (ie different to mine) opinions on pretty much everything; now I feel far more positive about them in the light of a high score for Joanna. Even the criticism has been reasoned with no aggro.

You know how when records have those bits that reliably send a shiver down the back of your neck?

I think ā€œ(a plane passed silently overhead)ā€ from Spiderland is my best example.

Cannot think of another record that has as many of these moments as Ys. It’s just shiver moments front to back.

Last fm tells me I’ve not listened to JN at all this year but after reading this thread I reckon she’ll be my most played artist by the end of the month.

(Voted 5 btw)

There’s about a thousand of them. Like, it is a starry sky with each of those moments a point of light, constellations of them. More than you can appreciate in a night, maybe in a lifetime you will never manage to appreciate every one but that is ok because of the beauty of what you do catch and the redt im the background you still absorb. Sorry I’m talking dilly now, jidt the relief listening to this now sfter the day I’ve had it is a bit overwhelming.

And absolutely great example from Spiderland

Stretched on a hoop where I stitch - this adage:
ā€œBless our house and its heart so savageā€

Totally need to design some form of embroidery with this on for the indeterminate time in the future I finally get to move into my own place.

100% agree on Ys being stacked full of those spine tingly moments.

The second half of the last verse of Emily (from ā€œCome on homeā€ onwards) is just jaw droppingly good.

The following section of Monkey and Bear is up their with her best moments too.

So, with the courage of a clown, or a cur
Or a kite, jerking tight at its tether
In her dun-brown gown of fur
And her jerkin’ of swansdown and leather

Bear would sway on her hind legs;
The organ would grind dregs of song, for the pleasure
Of the children, who’d shriek
Throwing coins at her feet
Then recoiling in terror

Only skin is littered with them too.
