Should probably be a 5 just for Girl from the North Country alone - its pure magic!

These are fantastic too

It’s awesome, as is the more recent live album (krqoc or something?)

It’s a mark of how much I love the Cash version that I place it a above both of them.

I’ve got a few compilations of his. This one is the best one for me and has songs from all across his career. Worth checking out if you want a good introduction to his stuff.

It’s a very good looking physical box set too.

I haven’t investigated that far. That kind of country isn’t really my kind of thing. Hurt is great obviously and I love his cover of I See A Darkness. His bit on Girl From The North Country is good. But beyond that I’ve never got much out of it. Vaguely annoying that he’s one of those people that in pop culture there’s an expectation that you’re ā€˜supposed’ to like him.

My local big Asda was great. They’d sell classic albums and Best Of’s in the bargain bucket for Ā£3.

Bought my first Johnny Cash compilation from there in the early 90s. I’m a big fan of his.

It’s worth downloading a Best Of or maybe listening to on that someone’s put on YouTube. Hopefully, it’ll be something you enjoy. ā€œHurtā€ is almost an outlier I’m his usual sound but his tunes are always great and often there’s a brilliant storytelling in the songs.

I have a best of and have heard a few other songs and that feels like enough. There’s a lot of country I really like but Johnny Cash has never really ended up in that top tier for me. 3.

Slightly ashamed to say I got into Johnny Cash because The Man Comes Around is in the opening credits to the Zack Snyder Dawn of The Dead remake.

Find it interesting (not good or bad, just interesting) which artists get ā€˜only heard a few singles - abstain’ and which get ā€˜only heard a few singles - 5/5 (or 1/5)’

It’s days like this when Spotify’s ā€œThis Is Johnny Cashā€ playlist is a real benefit.

I’ve said before that final marks in HGATR seem to be primarily decided by the behaviour of those that admit they don’t know much about the artist. In the end of the day if you know a lot about someone it’s probably because you like them so you will give a high mark. Conversely, unless an artist is really culturally prominent (like The Beatles or Queen) you are not likely to have heard much of someone’s music if you don’t like them. If we all abstained in the latter cases everyone would end up with a high mark (because only the fans would vote).

I’m not really familiar with most of his music, but as I said in the U2 thread, The Wanderer is incredible and one of my favorite songs.

This track really brought him back to the worlds attention I reckon. He was playing country nightclubs in Ireland in the late 80’s and he was a bit of a joke but the Wanderer brought him back to bigger shows.

I have this and it is truly excellent. Probably don’t need anything else by him except that box set, San Quentin/Folsom and a couple of the American recording albums

Bit of a tough one this tbh. When he’s good he’s really good. Ring Of Fire, Jackson, Folsom Prison etc etc are all grade A classics for a reason - they’re great songs performed really well.

But then if you look at the whole catalogue you also have a lot of things like

and I didn’t like the way the American series got milked and milked for ever decreasing returns after his death (although I don’t suppose he had much to do with it!). It’s not like I’m giving him a massive slagging, but how many lost decades can you have before you’re a four instead of a five?

Did a mean Springsteen cover as well

Then there’s nothing more that can be done for you I’m afraid.

Managed to see him live once, at Glastonbury in 1994. He was entirely brilliant.

Nobody else voted for Highwayman so I’ll post it in the hope you all enjoy a bit of cosmic country reincarnation balladry

The only Highwaymen song I’ve heard before is this one. Let’s just say it didn’t encourage me to explore their catalogue any further…
