Turgid shite

I’m sure there are a bunch of people on here for whom KoL were a gateway band, or who were 16-18 when Molly’s Chambers came out, and have a soft spot for them. That’s fine, but they’re really not my thing. I find it as stodgy as others find Oasis (who were my gateway band and who I think I gave a 3/5 to)

I quite like Bat for Lashes’ cover of Use Somebody, but that’s not enough to give them anything more than a 1/5.

First 2 albums are genuinely good. The Holy Roller Novocaine EP was a real revelation when it came out and they could have been amazing. They did not do that, and had one of the sharpest declines in quality in music history and quickly became utterly unlistenable. Not sure how to score this one tbh.

Two

Suspect they’ll get a kicking here but I don’t really think they deserve it. They disappeared up their own arse and haven’t released anything that has caught my attention for yeeeaaarrrss but first two albums are good. Handful of good songs on the rest.

A lot of the stuff that I was into around that time is tied up with mates, gigs, night’s out and lots of it I can’t be arsed with anymore - the white stripes to an extent, the coral definitely and so on - but the kings of Leon I usually still enjoy if they pop up on shuffle.

Scraping into 3, I think.

They escape a one because there are some good songs on the first album and they were okay live around that time. Nothing since has been worth anything, A generous two from me.

Liked the 1st 2 albums at the time and a couple of tracks off album 3. Haven’t heard anything apart from the singles since. They have sounded like they can be arsed for years.

2/5 prefer the stuff I like to any of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

First album wasn’t brilliant but had potential. Then everything they did after was absolute turgid shite. Genuinely baffled by their level of popularity and success.

1/5

Would imagine they’ll be a strong contender for bottom spot.

Might not go quite as far as describing them as a gateway band as I don’t think I really got into anyone off the back of them, but I’m definitely in that age band with them that @colon_closed_bracket mentions, and the first three albums were all on heavy rotation for me and most of my friends. Fourth album was the first new release I ever remember thinking "What the fuck was that", a ludicrously shit album. Most of their latter stuff has got a good claim to not exist.

Dunno. Generous 2, even though I’m not sure I’d even enjoy the earlier stuff that much now.

Hard not to give them a 1 just for Sex On Fire. Was big just as I was coming out of secondary school and finally going to parties and clubs, it was everywhere and it ruined my life

Even the ‘good’ stuff was just a slightly richer man’s jet, if we’re honest with ourselves

Pretty shite, there was a brief moment where that third album everyone hated really clicked for me for 10-12 days though.

Reallly don’t like them. Was 16 in 2010 when I guess they were at their ‘peak’ and I tried to like them (as you do that age) but they never clicked for me.

5/5 for the pigeons who shat on them though. GBOP.

Saw them at Glastonbury in 2008 and really enjoyed it. Was right on the cusp of that third album coming out, which I didn’t altogether hate but the fourth one was enough to put me off them for good. Even at their best I’d describe their output as incidental, but they get a 2 because they don’t plumb the same depths of true awfulness as Queen, RHCP etc.

I saw them live around the time of their 2nd album and really enjoyed it, 3rd album was ok but not really a fan of anything they’ve done since. That music video of them singing in a barn with a choir of kids was a memorable low point.

Third album had a couple of decent songs. Think Magoo was one of them. Be There wasn’t that bad either. Parts of that album suggested they might go a bit TVOTR. Of course they absolutely didn’t.

2/5 for now. Might change to a 1/5
