I started with Semper Femina, it’s an outstanding record. I can let it go round and round forever. Her last one was ok, not heard much else.

She can have a 4 just for this

She’s good. I can’t listen to too much in one go and it’s often too slow/pensive for me but it is lovely when in the mood.

Love the first album and these:

Absolute middle of the road 3 for me.

I think Goodbye England is magnificent and very special, but on the whole the rest doesn’t move me at all. Saw her as a support act once and it was just very dull.

I’m going to give a 4.

That run of the first 5 tracks on Once I Was an Eagle where they all blend into each other is absolutely brilliant.

Like Biffy Clyro in reverse

Once I Was an Eagle is amazing. 5/5 album. Liked her earlier albums, not so keen on the later stuff but she is clearly very talented. Been around for ages and she’s still so young.

Going 5 though because the accent chat is whatever, I like her and this is great

For people that find the Joni Mitchell thing grating you should give this album a go - it’s fantastic and a little more varied than her standard folky stuff she has been doing

Nothing against her but she’s never done anything for me. She’s a little too Mumford-adjacent for me to take her seriously. 2.

Everything I’ve heard has been firmly not my thing.

Just completely out of curiosity, does that mean you’ve abstained or given a low score? Always wondered how people translate their comments into a score that’s all.

Abstained, in general if I haven’t heard a full album or enough songs to form a considered opinion then I don’t vote.

I think Ghosts and Night Terror off the first album are her two best tracks, then she followed that up with a stronger overall album in I Speak Before I Can.

Was very excited to see what came next, but I’ve been really disappointed with everything else. Found the next two albums trudging and monotonous, got nothing from them whatsoever.

What she’s done since hasn’t been as bad but still pretty uninteresting.

Feel generous in voting a 3, favourably weighing the first two albums at a kind 4 vs the rest of her career at a fair 2.

I’ve liked bits here and there (Goodbye England, the opening run on …Eagle), but I don’t think I’ve ever been able to sit through a whole album without getting bored. Just not my thing. Probably a 2, if only for a memorable moment one New Year’s morning when I was on a train going through snow covered fields in the Gloucestershire countryside and listening to Goodbye England.

I think shes brilliant, one of the most talented folky singers we have at the moment. Not sure she’s made a bad record although admittedly some of them get a bit samey all the way through. Semper Femina and Short Movie are my favourites I think. Her last record Song for Our Daughter is also really good and possibly for me the most immediate of her career. I think one of her strengths is the arrangements and production on her songs, not sure how to describe it but it always feels like there’s a lot of space in them. They sound amazing on headphones.

Her lockdown show at the BBC Proms was also amazing - almost brought me to tears, felt like a cathartic moment during a miserable time. Recommend seeking it out if its still online.

Find it astonishing that she wrote this aged 16/17 tbh

He walked down a busy street
Staring solely at his feet
Clutching pictures of past lovers at his side
Stood at the table where she sat
And removed his hat
In respect of her presence
Presents her with the pictures and says
“These are just ghosts that broke my heart before I met you.
These are just ghosts that broke my heart before I met you”

Opened up his little heart
Unlocked the lock that kept it dark
And read a written warning
Saying ‘I’m still mourning
Over ghosts
Over ghosts
Over ghosts
Over ghosts that broke my heart before I met you’

Lover, please do not
Fall to your knees
It’s not
Like I believe in
Everlasting love

So he went crazy at nineteen
Said he’d lost all his self esteem
And couldn’t understand why he was crying

He would stare at empty chairs
Think of the ghosts that once sat there
The ghosts that broke his heart.
Oh the ghosts that broke my heart
The ghosts that broke his heart
Oh the ghosts that broke my heart
The ghosts the ghosts the ghosts the ghosts the ghosts the ghosts
The ghosts that broke my heart before I met you

Lover, please do not
Fall to your knees
It’s not
Like I believe in
Everlasting love

He says ‘I’m so lost,
Not at all well’

Ooh
Ooh

After it was done when there was nothing left to be
Turned out I’d been following him and he’d been following me
After it was done after it was over
We were just two lovers crying on each other’s shoulder

Lover, please do not
Fall to your knees
It’s not
Like I believe in
Everlasting love

Lover, please do not
Fall to your knees
It’s not
Like I ever believed in
Everlasting love

It’s also staggering how young she was when her first record came out. Really impressive songwriting and muscianship, considering at the same age I had barely progressed past barre chords (still haven’t tbf).

The Union Chapel live stream she did was even better, it was all on youtube at one point but I think they’ve taken it down now
