Finding this chat about Lizzo album being ā€˜catered for the streaming mindsetā€™ a bit of bollocks. Cuz I Love You is 11 songs and 33 minutes. The deluxe version has a few hit singles at the end, which has been happening on CDs for aeons. Feels a bit like ā€˜r+b/hip-hopā€™ albums arenā€™t proper albums snobbery to me, sorry.

I mentioned earl and at least one of his albums that Iā€™d put into the ā€˜trendā€™ I was talking about is one of my favourites of the last 5 years, listened to it like a million times. pretty obvious that music consumption changes with technology, has nothing to do with whether they are good or not

I think itā€™d be limiting to not consider Lizzo as a commercially minded artist, it doesnā€™t make it ā€œlessā€ of an art at all but it does set the perimeters differently from something niche that would have other measures it cares about. Isnā€™t it all about making the perfect set of bangers?

Lizzo made an album about understanding your self worth, body positivity and not defining yourself by your relationships that also happened to be full of bangers. If the deafening screams I heard at her Brixton Academy gig, for both bangers and ballads, are anything to go by, that message resonated especially strongly with young women. Think itā€™s maybe DiS who need to reconfigure what their idea of a ā€˜classicā€™ album is rather than asking if Lizzo will ever set out to make one.

Yeah tbh my original poll was solely based on the fact that I think she has the ability to potentially make an amazing 10/10 album not whether she wants to and why that might be.

Can you explain this a bit more? Itā€™s alright if you donā€™t want to I just donā€™t even know what I feel constitutes a classic album really. Cultural significance beyond it being in the eye of the beholder I guess. Should that change?

People (not saying lastdino is doing this) tend to conflate ā€œclassicā€ with ā€œsomething I really likeā€, and to my mind thatā€™s not accurate. I think ā€œclassicā€ carries a bit more weight of history and is a bit more objectively based, taking account of wider reactions to the record over time. I mean, I think Rumours is total dogshit, but I wouldnā€™t dispute that itā€™s a classic album. Plenty of classic albums are dreadful, and plenty of albums I love wouldnā€™t be deemed classics. Classic =/= quality.

I donā€™t even know anymore. I just wanted to make it clear it wasnā€™t to insult Lizzo or anything sheā€™s already done pondering if sheā€™d make a classic record, I hope theyā€™re all considered classics fwiw
