I like Sick Scenes because of that tour. Think they’ve definitely improved as a live act over time even their last couple of records are a little patchy. The first couple of times I saw them they were a bit poor.

Hello Sadness is their best record for me.

I think Los Camp! are a great choice for a HGATR:

  • string of albums
  • former DiSer as a member
  • often discussed / referenced on DiS (with some people loving them and some hating them)

The Shins are a terrible live band, aren’t they? Shame because I love them on record.

I always really liked you too x

(and still do, obv)

It could be clearer they could have called the band Dan Aykroyd

But then you wouldn’t get to say it like the batman theme

Completely agree on this. My favourite of theirs off of that album too.

And for me, links to what everyone says when they say they grow alongside the band. Sick Scenes came out when I was in a horrific job, in a horrific Essex town, which I had to get the bus for each day at 7am and would rinse the album on the way feeling sorry for myself.

Felt like the album was perfectly articulating how I felt about life and it not being what you necessarily always imagined.

Ok they could have called the band Dan(ananan)Aykroyd

This was the album where they went bad and mercer fired the original band. Was really bland and dreadful sound. Never saw the original line up live

Yeah that song in particular really captures a certain acute kind of anxiety and depression that was very relevant to me (and my wife) at the time.

I saw the original band play live too, they dont work well in a live environment.

Cheers! You’re not so bad yourself.

:coffee: it’s a bit dodgy to write a song where you threaten to assault my friend who had just recovered from being really really badly beaten up (had to get surgery, didn’t leave the house for about a year) cause Gareth was obsessed with a sixth former that they were both into or going out with or something. :coffee:

I’m not keen on the voice so haven’t really listened though.

I adore Los Campesinos! I have probably too many t shirts of theirs and recently got a Sick Scenes tattoo. When I was travelling around Portugal I made a little personal pilgrimage to Amarante, I sat by the river with a Super Bock listening to Sick Scenes - loved it.

Every album is fantastic, brilliant lyrics and Tom is an underrated guitarist too.

Also do a lot of good causes, raise loads of money and are not afraid to call out bullshit while many bands stay silent.

Saw them headline EotR a few years ago and they were absolutely wonderful. Might just have got lucky with the timing though, think it was their first show in years and Mercer was clearly loving it.

I tried to like them. Hold On Now, Youngster… dropped off the back of a massive hype train and I duly picked it up to see what the fuss was about… And it was ok, I guess? Kind of shouty and exuberant and unfocused. It was the sound of a lot of people having fun but basically forgetting to bring the really memorable music to the party. I’ve not listened to it in a long time and honestly the only song I remember is You! Me! Dancing!

I gave Romance Is Boring a go when that came out and that’s pretty much when I realised they weren’t really for me, but I could understand why others (mostly young’ns) were really into them. Almost every song I’ve heard since has only really cemented my opinion. A soft but affectionate 2.

I saw them around the time of Wincing The Night Away - it was one of those NME gigs with a few others on the bill. I don’t know what was so bad about them - they just seemed really bored, I guess.
