The title track of the second album. A really weird way to use your platform imo.

Saw them live in my very first week of uni (2007), didn’t know who they were beforehand but remember enjoying it. You’d think that would give me some lingering fondness but no, by the time the album had come out I’d gone right off them. The song titles, the lyrics, the vocals, don’t like any of it.

I’ve gone 2 though as 1 seems too harsh

Favourite song title of theirs?

For me it’s got to be ‘This Is How You Spell “hahaha, We Destroyed the Hopes and Dreams of a Generation of Faux-Romantics”‘ just for it’s ridiculousness

“ You said he got his teeth fixed, I’m gonna break them
I’ve got a heart on fire
He said he’s got his sights set on getting to you
I’ve got a fist on fire”

Either way that’s a really weird lyric isn’t it? Don’t reckon Kozelek would get away with that

Great deep cut that I always forget about.

Played it live (for the first time?) in London this year

Wonder if it’s too late to go back to last week’s AQOS and change my answer for ‘The worst genre of music’

remember when they made a second album but refused to allow it to be called a second album

they were years ahead of My Vitriol in that sense

I was a big fan of their first record at the time, the rest of their albums passed me by a little but I absolutely loved No Blues. Not entirely sure why, some of the songs have a real melancholy edge which might be the key there.

Would be slightly weird even if it was in general terms, but if it’s in reference to a real life incident that’s very hmmmm.

Oh yeah, that was odd.

I’ve never heard them so am abstaining.

Keep up the good work though.

Slayer (cough). Plus I’ll likely be returning to work so won’t be able to ramble as much soon.

Remember them name dropping Xiu Xiu a lot around about 2008 - felt a bit like when the nerdy guy at school tries to chum up to the lad who smokes and has already lost his virginity in the hope it makes him look cool.

Find these wordy English bands who reckon references are good writing really grating

Think that’s their biggest crime really though, being English

Tbh this is probably slightly unfair given I can’t remember exact examples, but I was a bit surprised by the unanimous GBOLs sentiment as I always got the impression Gareth was a bit of a prick. He may well have mellowed in recent years, obviously their politics and the things they speak out for are good.

Who’s who in this scenario?

Agree it’s a weird lyric and a bit incongruous to their whole ethos and his personality in general. If that whole album is about who I think it’s about then I don’t think she was in sixth form but that’s a minor detail I guess.

I struggle with all those indie pop bands who sing in a really strong English accent. Dunno why but it grates on me really badly
