I couldn’t find a singles discography so someone will be nominated to pick all 5 playlist tracks. Feel free to make polls for songs if you wanna, I don’t know enough about them to do it really.

Have been meaning to get around to Low since hearing Double Negative. Which album to start with board?

Oh gosh, I love Low so much.

More like High! (I have scored them a 5)

I can’t pick an album!! So difficult. 5, obv.

Straight 5. Nearly 30 years of just being an incredible band. And they cap it by making their masterpiece in Double Negative.

5/5

My favourite band

One of my favourite bands of the last 25 years - intense, emotionally moving, and musically adventurous.

They’ve mastered the ‘always different, always the same’ thing that great bands have - their records sound radically different to each other (compare Double Negative to The Invisible Way, or I Could Live in Hope to The Great Destroyer) but are always unmistakably Low. The songwriting compares to anyone of their era - just consider the dark moral complexity of Murderer or the emotional directness of Shots and Ladders or In Metal. They deserve massive credit for producing their best and most radical record 25 years into their career- that’s almost unique.

I wavered slightly because I was determined to keep my 5 for those with the influence of people like Bowie, Prince, Joy Division and the Velvets but then I remembered the people I’ve given 4s to and how much more Low mean to me really. A 5.

Big old 5. Got into them since Ones and Sixes, but Double Negative made me really explore all their albums.

Love them so much now.

5, easily. Possibly the most consistent band out there, live shows are always total magic and my favourite musical couple. What a band.

I think you could start in a number of different places. I first got into them through Things We Lost In The Fire - which is an excellent album - but you could also work chronologically, maybe skipping a few of the albums? Something like:

  • I Could Live In Hope
  • The Curtain Hits The Cast
  • (Secret Name)
  • Things We Lost In The Fire
  • (Trust)
  • The Great Destroyer
  • Drums and Guns
  • (Ones and Sixes)

The ones in brackets are excellent too, but I’d go for those five in bold first. Can’t think of many bands with such a strong back catalogue over the past 25+ years.

Listen to the first two (I Could Live in Hope and Long Division) for the sparse, slowcore essence of Low.

Listen to Trust and Things we Lost in the Fire for Low in their confident, epic peak.

Listen to Secret Name for their best set of songs on one record.

Listen to Drums and Guns and The Great Destroyer for them experimenting with different sounds and emotional approaches and, on Drums and Guns, embracing the darkness and, on The Great Destroyer, embracing rock.

Then listen to the others (but leave The Invisible Way until last).

Unique and brilliant band, but not the greatest of the great

Another in the long line of bands that make me feel like an alien for not getting it
