Have only heard bits and bobs but the good stuff is really really good. Paper Planes is just a classic innit, proper pop gem, lyrics invoking people’s worst fears of immigrants smuggling drugs and that, done in this perfect, swaggery, toungue-in-cheek way, and recontextualizing a classic bit of British rock through the Clash sample. Dead good I think. That album it’s off is also good, I like how abrasive a lot of it is, for 2007 it seems pretty ahead of its time, but also quite unique. Definitely a 4 like.

Not always a fan of this podcast (sometimes it overintellectualises pop imo) but their discussion of Paper Planes was really interesting -

Hence the word “inevitable”.

this sounds exactly up my street, gonna check it out

Yeah 4 for me. KALA is very good, but a lot of patchy stuff

I probably have TBF. Feels like I’ve not heard her mentioned since Bad Girls which was like 7 years ago?

Haven’t listened to enough of her albums to give a considered view but if her entire discography was a double A side of Paper Planes and Born Free it’d be a five.

Think she’s great most of the time and at the very least interesting the rest of the time.

Saw her on the Kala tour and was surprised at how good she was live. She had the Manchester Academy 2 (not a great venue) jumping like a sweaty rave, although i left the room for the Paper Planes encore as she was wildly out of tune!

Definitely a high 4 minimum. Will have a binge this weekend and might bump it up.

The third album was patchy but I absolutely love the vocal on this

Eerily slow, this one.

She was meant to get some flack for being a sympathiser to the Tamil Tigers or something wasn’t she? Know absolutely nothing about conflict in Sri Lanka, which I imagine has changed vastly even in the time since she was in the news for it about 10 years ago. It was always interesting to me tho, made her a unique British pop star, being so outspoken about her heritage from a place that everyone in this country should be a bit more familiar with

Would you say “a lot of comments are M.I.A.”?

I think she’s an incredibly interesting artist to read about but I find her art barely average.
It’s a 2 from me.

I’m scoring her a 5 on Mrs TWIs behalf.

I listened to her singles when she first came out, but gave her a proper listen last year. Regret waiting so long to properly dig in. She has a lot of really good projects.

i like Paper Planes but never really got round to listen to anything else. might give Kala a listen

i spotted Maya in a record shop the other day and thought about how younger people might not instantly recognise the things on the cover as the YouTube bar as it hasn’t looked like that for a while

interesting eh?
