Its not incompatible though is it? People literally do it all the time. Its possible to be left wing and have a screwed up morale compass whilst holding very left wing principles. Hell I’d argue, in music at least, it hasn’t become a thing people have paid attention to until the last few years with any real degree of scrutiny. In very left wing scenes no-less

Political beliefs doesn’t stop someone from being an asshole and them being an asshole suddenly doesn’t make them politically different. Ideaologies and actions are very different things and sometimes I just think its people with wishful thinking that go ‘oh they cant be leftwing because they’re sexiant deviants and I dont want to be associated with them. Only people on the right or centrists are wrong and bad’

In an ideal world it should be incompatible. It’s damaging. How many times (and this is not related to the Manics) but how many times have we seen a pattern where a man will join/ally themselves with a left wing movement only to use that position to engage in abusive relationships? It’s damaging and concerning in so many ways.

Hardcore Punk? Riot Grrrl?

And yet. Here we were 10 years ago with people dismissing all sorts of claims about women feeling unsafe in and around the music industry and scene. It hasnt been until recently that people outside of the scenes promoting it are actually paying attention to a very real problem. Which still is a problem

We’re not in an ideal world though.

Women felt unsafe at Riot Grrrl shows? When?

he made the Michael Stipe comment, that edge lord gets no benefit of the doubt from me

/o\ I meant the music scene in general. Riot GRRL was set up as a response to very thing I accused the music industry of having. And yes. Im almost certain that women have felt unsafe at a Riot GRRL show at some point in history.

I cant believe all this nonsense stemmed from my outrageous claim that not a left wing people are bastions of morality. I don’t even care for the MPS that much. I like… 3 of their albums? Never really had reverence for the band as people or their politics.

Yup. In the late 80s / early 90s. Which is why it seems strange that you are saying that this has only become an issue “in the last few years”.

I didnt say it has become an issue over the last few years

all this stemmed because you misunderstood, no one was saying that. leftwing people should be held against their left wing principles was the point

Riot Grrrl gave masses of hugely needed publicity to the issue which extended well outside of their own scene. Thirty years ago.

I didn’t even accuse you of anything in this post. I said ‘from my claim’

Thank you.

Obviously a shameful and inexcusable thing to say, but has nothing to do with the exploitative behaviour you are accusing him of.

context

Riot Grrrl gave masses of hugely needed publicity to the issue which extended well outside of their own scene. Thirty years ago.

If you think that message had a wide enough impact that the problem evaporated from all other scenes or was an issue that people took across the board SERIOUSLY 30 years ago then I dont know how to break it to you…

It was rampant and being dismissed, even on these very forums 10 years ago.

LOL. Do you honestly think I am arguing that the impact of Riot Grrrl was big enough to make the problem “evaporate” across the music industry? JFC.

Your original quote was “Hell I’d argue, in music at least, it hasn’t become a thing people have paid attention to until the last few years with any real degree of scrutiny”. This is demonstrably not the case. Addressing it was one of the driving forces behind an entire, female driven, scene. To suggest that people have only started to take the issue seriously in the last couple of years is insulting to the work they did.

I said specifically outside of the scenes promoting it but you’re continuously choosing to ignore that sentiment and even excluding it from your quote so why bother.

As I’ve said already, Riot Grrrl’s impact extended way beyond their own scene. I’m not ignoring it at all.
