It feels churlish to completely write an artist off without knowing too much of their material. So I just fired up Spotify and had a quick listen to some of his most popular songs. Based on that:

Absolutely fucking not for me Clive/5.

Think this could be a 1, just cannot get on board with his stuff.

My dad used to pride himself on being able to drive to work within the length of Bat Out of Hell (album version).

The only record of his I’ve ever had any time for is Dead Ringer for Love and it’s as cheesy, wop-bop-sho-pop as it gets. More Jim Steinmann’s fault than his, I guess c.f. Bonnie Tyler, Celine Dion.

1/5

Bring on the ironic 5s.

I’m giving him a 4 just for twice covering Future of the Left.

No, that was Scatman John.

Or, you know, people that just like Meat Loaf.

Would have loved to have heard a Scatman John cover of that.

Fun at points, but ultimately pretty shite. Not my bag. 2/5

Can’t give him a 1 because bat out of hell is an undeniable tune, but can’t go higher than a 2 for the man who wrote I Would Do Anything For Love.

2 it is then.

On a classic rock board, yeah. Not DiS, surely?

Sorry, I’ll keep my snide comments to myself (again).

Difficult one, this. I find him absolutely terrible but also strangely great. I can happily go years and years and years without listening, or even thinking of him, but then sometimes I’ll get an itch that only playing Bat Out Of Hell a few times can scratch. It’s ludicrous, bombastic over the top nonsense, but in the right light these are positive qualities. I’d rather listen to Bat than I would the Stereophonics or RHCP, that’s for sure.

It’s Scatman’s World, and we just live in it.

It’s a 1. I’m as much of a sucker for a big, cheesy rock number as anyone, but nothing about Loaf does anything for me. Absolute shite

My mum apparently played Bat Out Of Hell (album) while in labour with me. Make of this what you will

Think I was 8 or 9 when I’d Do Anything For Love was number one for about 6 months and I absolutely fucking hated it. There’s just something about his music that really winds me up. Hate it. This made me laugh just now too when I looked up I’d Do Anything…

The last six verses feature a female singer who was credited only as “Mrs. Loud” in the album notes.

The last six verses. Jfc. 1/5.
