Yep not arguing that James didn’t. It sucks. Think it came from a place of ignorance rather than malice or conscious racism but that doesn’t make it any better.

I think @Bamnan might approve of Nailbomb. They were a left leaning politically charged band, who released 1 album, followed up by a cheaply produced live album called Proud to Commit Commercial Suicide, before never releading any more music, leaving space for others to be listened to instead.

Don’t think he’d like the music though.

ā€œWhy does everyone talk about the people I murdered, why doesn’t anyone talk about all the people I didn’t murder?ā€

I don’t approve of the name either

doesn’t the ā€œdon’t tread on meā€ phrase and snake logo have known right-wing associations too?

And here it is. You take one piece of anecdotal evidence and apply it to everyone in a scene you know absolutely nothing about, just like you do with BDSM. You are by far the most judgemental and intolerant person on this forum.

this is a bad analogy because me complaining about this stuff isn’t considered inherently bad and able to be judged in isolation like say a murder would be. The repetitive nature and frequency is central to the point Matt was making

No.

well according to wiki at least

Tea Party movement symbol[edit]

The flag at a Tea Party rally in September 2009

Beginning in 2009 at Tea Party rallies, the Gadsden Flag has been adopted as a symbol of the American Tea Party movement.[20][21][22][23] It was also displayed by members of Congress at Tea Party movement rallies.[24] Some lawmakers have called it a ā€œpolitical symbolā€ because of this association.[22][25]

this was directly after anecdotal evidence about how nice and welcoming mosh pits are

What’s a good starting point then Dan? I don’t like any metal that I’ve knowingly heard (can just about stomach some Wolves In The Throne Room maybe? ), but always happy to be persuaded that I just haven’t heard the good stuff.

No prior exposure to Sepultura - any cookie monster vocals though and ahm oot.

Seriously people need to learn to read what I’m actually saying if they’re going to criticise me directly over this.

I haven’t used that one anecdotal example to apply to everyone, I never said it was anything other than anecdotal evidence.

I have already said up thread there are probably some metal bands that run counter to the right wing orthodoxy of the most famous acts and asked for people to provide examples and have liked posts where people have provided examples.

I have shown specific links to right wing ideology & support of torture from the band this thread is actually about.

I have explained why mosh pits aren’t inclusive to everyone.

their song titles sound cringeworthy and a bit gimmicky but I definitely applaud their bravery in speaking out to condemn the alt-right in strong terms!

Hate to be that guy, but my favourite stuff is actually their two earliest albums, but death metal is my favourite metal. I’ve also got a massive soft spot for 80s punk and metal from central and southern America, genuinely some of my favourite music. They don’t use death growls or Cookie Monster stuff, but it’s as close as they got, so might not be the best starting point for you.

Beneath the Remains is generally seen as one of the best thrash metal albums ever made, so this would probably be as good a place as any. Chaos AD is also great and possibly a shade more accessible for a non metal fan, so this might work too.

Then there’s Roots. Kind of split their existing fan base at the time - brought in a lot of different elements, including groove metal and some indigenous Brazilian music. Some people think it’s a total masterpiece (it’s one of the very first entries in esteemed metal mag Decibel’s Hall of Fame series for example). I’m not quite on board with it, but it very obviously hits the spot for lots of people.

Max left the band after Roots and I’m not as familiar with their albums after him, perhaps someone else knows these better??

To;dr start with either Chaos AD or Roots. If you start with Roots and don’t like it, be aware that it’s not totally representative. If you cant get on with Chaos AD, they’re possibly not for you.

ā€œBlack metal’s malicious and challenging temperament is what makes it so enjoyable. It’s the perfect forum in which to indulge the more abhorrent side of your nature, rage against the hypocrisy and stale values of the modern world, and revel in some good old blasphemy.ā€

sounds a bit edgy also ā€œBut there’s a point at which the cathartic enters the realm of the offensive – that point being different for every listener.ā€ Really can’t get on board with this, like the whole ā€œwell everyone can choose what is and isn’t too far for themā€ stuff, everybody obviously has blind spots but we shouldn’t be trying to explain away the problematic parts of media so easily.
