One of my absolute favourite videos on the internet. The way Lombardo starts it like a scooter taking off too fast. Kirk NAILING the solo while dealing with the pressure of playing twice as fast as usual. James’ laugh before the breakdown ending. Masterful stuff, really. Wish they’d have done Puppets with Lombardo!

Todd in the Shadows did a Lulu vid a few weeks ago. Prior to that I thought Lou Reed had done quite a lot of experimental music, what I’ve heard is pretty mainstream or conventional and it seems most of it is that.

Lulu is a spectacular misstep on every front, not sure what else to compare it to. An elderly man and some multi-millionaire’s vanity project. It’s almost like they said ā€œyou thought St Anger was bad hold our beersā€¦ā€ The Metallica bits don’t work with the Lou Reed bits and they don’t work on their own either, it’s the worst thing the band have done by some margin, even more so than St Anger.

At least it’s an experiment, I suppose. I’d argue that the Sunn/Scott Walker album is a much better and more successful version of ā€œelder statesman of cult standing plus Metal bandā€ I’d also say that Walker’s Bish Bosch is a much better eccentric, sprawling epic with heavy elements.

I defend Lulu pretty hard, it’s never not interesting (although plenty is uncompromising) and Junior Dad in particular is beautiful and the perfect capstone to Reed’s career. Totally in line with things like Waves of Fear from his 80s work.

Thought I’d managed to snag a copy of Black album for 50p and it turns out to be this shite.
