Not really a singles artist so post your favourite tracks or whatever and I’ll pick 5 for the playlist at the end.

Oh my god yes! :grinning: An artist I’ve can’t wait to enthuse about! Will get more stuck in once I’m on my laptop!

At his creative peak (2003 - 05) he was an absolute beast. Between June 2003 and October 2005 he released five brilliant albums (Take Me to Your Leader, Vaudeville Villain, Madvilliany, Mmm…Food, The Mouse and the Mask). It’s hard to think of anything comparable since the 60s (when people used to put out two or three albums a year routinely). The consistent quality on those records, and the variety, is stunning.

All that just makes it even more frustrating and puzzling that he hasn’t released anything decent for more than a decade now.

I’ve gone for a 4, but if there is a late career renaissance (which I don’t rule out) it would edge up towards a five.

  1. More soul than a sock with a hole

I think the best pure assembler of words in hip-hop. Like his understanding of how syllables and rhymes work and fit together is extraordinary.

The run from about 2003 to 2005 where he released

Take me to your leader
Mm food
Vaudeville villain
Venemous villain
Madvillainy
The mouse and the mask

Plus a load of instrumentals stuff might be the hottest, most prolific hot streak any artist has had

That mid 00s run - Madvillain, Take Me To Your Leader, Vaudeville Villain - changed how I though about music. My hip-hop experience was very mainstream until then, and those records are just wow. Had such a massive effect on me. The rest of his output veers from the brilliant to the meh, but he’s such a unique talent.

Going back to listen to those albums now.

I think there are definitely some reasons behind it that explain what’s happened to him. I believe he was refused re-entry to the USA after being abroad and has basically lived in exile for years apart from the community that he used to record with? Can’t remember the exact details but there’s definitely a link between personal upheaval and his records drying up.

Think for balance it’s worth noting that there is some pretty dodgy stuff in his lyrics wrt women and it being a character piece isn’t an acceptable sweep under the rug of it

That’s true - tragically I think his son died as well - but also I think the creative drying up predates all of those (terrible) things by some years so it’s hard to disentangle.

Don’t think I’ve heard anything except Batty Boys. Where’s the best place to start?

literally anywhere but there! :grimacing:

mm food and Madvillainy. The latter is definitely his best, most complete album. The former is the best with his production work and has some bangers

If I had to pick, this is the one song I would choose:

I think there is a fair amount of consensus that Madvilliany is his best album, but really any of those albums from 2003-05 (listed by a few of us above) would do fine
