cocaine i think

Jarvis was on a lot of cocaine

:man_shrugging:
I’d say he wasn’t the only one at those awards to enjoy a bit of that tbf.
I mean regardless he wiggled his arse during a pretentious and cringe worthy stage performance by a paedo which had kids hugging him.
Hardly makes Jarvis a wrong un.

what? it wasn’t a political stand just Jarvis being a dick wasn’t it?

Like there wasn’t any stories about him yet at that time other than his odd relationship with Macaulay Culkin and then people largely just passed this off as “celebrity friends” at the time. If Jarvis knew something other people didn’t in the early 90s I’ve certainly never heard of it

It 100% doesn’t make him a wrong un. Not suggesting that for a second. I like Jarvis a lot and thought this was out of character tbh. Really don’t think this was calling or “protesting” MJ out for being a paedophile either. There were obviously stories, but this was way before the accusations started in earnest. Opinions will obviously differ, but just seems that calling a MJ performance out for being overblown and taking itself too seriously is just so basic and was kind of strange for a guy who is well known for his wit and intelligence. Yeah, the MJ performance is ridiculous, but you expect that – it’s basically what he does. To me the Jarvis thing just comes across as a guy who’s done too much gear making a bit of a dick of himself

guys if we can’t enjoy the greatest frontman of the 90s mooning a paedophile, what have we got left?

It was political, here’s Jarvis’s explanation (from an interview on TFI Friday!) shortly after:

"I was just sat there and watching it and feeling a bit ill, 'cause he’s there doing his Jesus act.

“And I could kind of see - It seemed to me there was a lot of other people who kind of found it distasteful as well, and I just thought: ‘The stage is there, I’m here and you can actually just do something about it and say this is a load of rubbish if you wanted.’”

Hoping for some Quincy Jones chat itt cos he never really did anything worthwhile without him did he?

Also, the police first investigated allegations against Jackson in 1993, so there were definitely stories about him at the time of the Brit Awards

I think sometimes it takes wit and intelligence to realise that the most effective point is a crude one. If Jarvis had got on stage and made a witty quip it wouldn’t be remembered at all.

I definitely remember there being stories at the time.
Regardless, my opinion was that it was a good thing for Jarvis to do. Mocking a totally ridiculous stage show and I found it funny at the time.
Any intent or subsequent retrospective justification is even better.

That’s not really political though is it

I’m not against it btw, it was funny, just think people are retrospectively putting more meaning into it than there actually was

Yeah, but I’m not sure being ‘remembered’ is always the best way of judging an incident. I mean if he’d ran on stage and done a massive shit, he would still have made a crude point and we’d still be talking about it, but i’m not convinced this would have been the best way to carry on

yeah that’s true, I think it would have been worse if Jarvis took a shit on the stage

Well we’re agreed on this at least

Yeah, well beyond rumors as well.

I remember seeing it at the time and being bewildered that no one involved in MJs management had stopped it. Just the messiah complex imagery was always going to play awfully in the UK (seems to somehow be more acceptable in the U.S.) never mind all the young children.
