I guiltily also find some of it funny too, e.g. the Trainspotting 2 orange lodge scene

omg that scene alone made the film’s existence worth it

The soundtrack has never grabbed me on record but sounded great with the film in the cinema (think they re-recorded it for the record?)

feel like mogwai would really approve of this somehow

gone 3. some undeniable bangers but haven’t listened to them in yonks but did really enjoy the les revenants soundtrack. have pood out some shite in the later years tho. think happy songs is their best, really like the vocoder stuff.

Maybe I could get them to do a song based on my experience. Would need an almighty surge in the vomit section.

I can empathise with this. I bought the debit album by the Inspiral Carpets when I was about 20. Got it home, put it on the record player and vomited everywhere from some awful viral bug. I could never listen to that album without thinking of that experience and their music still makes me feel ill to this day some 30 years later.

Gone for a 5. Although there’s a couple of albums that didn’t quite do it for me, everything else is excellent! Looking at that Central Belters track list I could’ve picked most of those as my favourite song (also they have the best song titles)! Although Young Team is my favourite record overall, Hardcore… is also right up there for me, loved when they went a bit krautrock here (and the video brings me back memories of when I lived in Glasgow around the time). One of the best bands I’ve seen too.

I’m another ‘better in the early days’ wanker.

Saw them live quite a lot, but not for at least 15 years. This was my first time and probably still my favourite (Arab Strap supporting):

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/mogwai/1997/the-garage-london-england-5bc32f44.html

Was also at the NME show with the Super Furrys at the Astoria and Glastonbury '99 (neither of which I remember enjoying that much).

Absolutely loved the run from between '97 and '00 from 10 Rapid to Cody where everything they released seemed essential and I’d go out and buy them in the week of release - the Rock Boogaloo single, 4 Satin, EP. But my interest in them came to a juddering halt with the My Father, My King single which (coming after the just OK Rock Action album) just sounded boring and Mogwai by numbers. (Judging at the gig setlists and general enthusiasm for this song in this thread it seems like this is an unpopular opinion).

Their 2000 ATP was also a blast and opened up a new world of music for me.

Gone with a 4.

Just put on Ten Rapid. What a record!

Yeah most music covers a huge amount too. I really don’t need to see a live rendition of a film soundtracks or most acoustic-y stuff etc.

A great record is so good. I think it’s only a few bands who consistently sound better live and that’s generally because no one did a good enough job of recreating their live sound on a record.

I don’t hate EITS and own that white record with the writing on it but yeah not fit to hold a candle to Mogwai. A bit like how Coldplay are just that particular facet of Radiohead over and over

I lost track after the early days but when I’ve stuck in a recent record it is still as good as the early days so if I came across as a ‘better in the early days’ type I am not :grinning:

Over the course of the year I think May Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door became a top 3 song of theirs for me. Such a unique mixture of ominous and peaceful and sad, it feels like drifting away towards something unpleasant up ahead.

I get the criticism but its post rock, isnt it? It’s a pretty incestuous genre and to go the length of time they have so prolifically (yes with a bit of sag) is amazing. They have an amazing collection of songs as the Central Belters tracklist lays clear.

I don’t get the uber geekfans who cant look last Cody.

I like each era of Mogwai and dip around. Call me sacrilegious but I think Party In The Dark is a massive pop beast. Donuts also still sends huge shivers down my spine. Would probably vote for them on the best song but overlooked. Otherwise My Father My King or Stanley Kubrick.

Starting point for me was Rock Action which will always hold a special place for me. Don’t get its haters… so they did a record that almost never had loud bits? Get over it.
