Only ever spend time with Illmatic but why would you bother with anything else?

Just waiting for the @The_Respected_User post I guess.

Did an all-time classic album in 1969; diminishing returns since.

For some reason, despite loving Illmatic, I’ve never investigated further. I might rectify this today.

What an album though.

3.5 bumped up to a 4 as I can’t give below a 4 for someone who made one of my top-5 albums of all time.

A bad human being who has had a really frustratingly inconsistent career but his highs are higher than anyone else’s.

I often find myself out of step with the general consensus on Nas. I loved the untitled album from ‘07 and that fairly recent Kanye produced one Nasir. But yeah, probably still a five even if everything since Illmatic was garbage (which of course it isn’t). 5.

Only ever listened to Illmatic, not really interested in the rest of his albums as they’re supposed to be wildly inconsistent. 3/5

Illmatic’s a serious GOAT contender. Flawless from the moment it opens with the sound of the sound of the subway train and you’re planted in Queensbridge for the next forty minutes. NY State of Mind still gets the hairs up even after all the years and listens.

Loads of individual highlights after that like The Message and Bridging The Gap, but the albums tend to be patchy. It Was Written was good, but almost impossible to make a case for anything other than Illmatic as his best record.

King’s Disease II from this year is better than it had any right to be, but maybe underlines part of his limitation that he’s artistically and thematically stuck in the world of being a young kid in of the projects. Without being able to reminisce on an increasingly distant part of his life he seems to struggle for spark.

A solid four for the highs.

Also, I feel like the inconsistency charge is a little overstated. He’s released an absolute truckload of albums over a real long career. Maybe that’s just what happens when your first album turns out to be the high point of an entire genre.

You said you’ve been in this ten, I’ve been in it five, smarten up, Nas
Four albums in ten years, homie? I could divide
That’s one every two, two of them things was due
One was (nah), the other was Illmatic
That’s a one-hot-album-every-ten-year average
And that’s so (lame)
Homie, switch up your flow
Your shit is garbage, what you trying to kick, knowledge?

maybe a four though actually cos illmatic is pretty good

Obviously incredibly talented but I’m not just going to ignore Kelis as he is clearly not a very pleasant person.

One great album, arguably genre defining album. Lots of terrible music and not a good person. 2/5

ohhh this one is hard. worth a 5 for the first two albums alone but its been a mixed bag ever since, like almost laughably so. you could def make a couple best ofs of his stuff post ‘it was written’. gods son, stillmatic and lost tapes are like 1/3-1/2 good each. def search out some of his guest features from his prime (and a few after): every time he teamed up with mobb deep it was gold plus stuff like verbal intercourse, mo money mo murder mo homicide, how ya livin, live at the bbq, grand finale, queensfinest, stay chisel, fast life, music for life.

‘nas is like’ was one of my most disappointing purchases of all time. i didnt listen to him for like 2-3 years after that came out, just so bad. skipped the hell right over nastradamus. hated ether… but i think i came back onboard with ‘made you look’ even then tho ive had a skeptical eye to everyting hes done since 96. all the new stuff… it just doesnt stick, sounds ok on a cursory listen but the magic is long gone. i do kinda like the album with damian marley tho.

illmatic will win the album polls (rightfully) but it was written was 90% as good.
contains my fav nas song (mainly cos ive played out everything on illmatic):

i personally just dont care to talk about illmatic any more in detail.

nas is an asshole. and hes often really grotesque in his sex raps… it comes off real gross with him cos its not like hes trying to be funny with it.

gotta go 5 to maintain balance #onhere but if this was a hip-hop forum id go 4, maybe even 3.5. hes let me down too many times.

Obligatory Four Tet mash up.

Weirdly, Street’s Disciple is the non-Illmatic album I enjoyed the most at the time. Might revisit. Its probably a bloated mess.

I see that “heard and enjoyed Illmatic, not fussed by anything else” has already been covered. Will add that I saw and really enjoyed Time is Illmatic at the cinema.
