wouldn’t have even brought it up if it wasn’t for the discussion about Joni Mitchell getting rated lower than Neil Young, I was stating that I’m actually voting on different criteria now to avoid this very situation.

Yes but let us assume that a lot of artists when they start out do not have much wealth. On account of them being good, popular, whatever they accrue wealth. They are still the same person. I know this is a very simplistic way of looking at it but still proves a point.

that’s your view, it’s not mine but if you’re happy to stop then I don’t really want to talk about this further as I think I’ve explained myself as well as I can at this point.

Haha phew. I was about to offer to help you put your shoes on the right way round.

When you say upthread that eg Neil Young should refuse the money, what do you think is going to happen to that money once he’s refused it? It’s only going to go into Warner’s pockets, isn’t it? Don’t think they’re going to spontaneously start up an orphanage or dog rescue centre with it.

he should have been like me and never released his music on a major label or he should have ended his contract and said “I’ve made enough money and benefited from my profile enough now I’m going to just support other artists and not release any more of my own music”

If Bill Gates didn’t have his billions it would have just gone to a worse billionaire who doesn’t have the bill gates foundation so actually thank god Bill Gates is a billionaire etc etc

I would like you all to know that I have been listening to Neil Young all morning at work whilst reorganising my section of the stockroom and I have changed my vote to a 5. Fuck me this is brilliant.

unless we want to repeat a cycle of those with less money and influence violently taking it from those with more who hoard it and work to further it forever then we need to look for ways people, especially those with power and influence can work against their own interests. Wealthy and hugely successful musicians stepping aside and promoting others would be a way to do this and powerful symbolically

another argument would be that if we want a system that can’t allow for a small 1% at the top etc then we need to stop legitimising and platforming those who continue to benefit from this and certainly not encourage others to go down this path and perpetuate it

On The Beach is a fucking stunner. How am I only hearing this record for the first time today, this is everything I love about music.

even under a fully communist system people of outstanding talent would be lauded above others

hopefully different and more diverse definitions of talents would be appreciated and reflected. I certainly think our conception of genius or talent would change if people’s access to power was equal and transparent; as great as Neil Young is I don’t think he has some miraculous gift that no others could match so some of it is certainly circumstances etc

Best Neil (I’m fucking trying my best here ok)
