pretty wild career path. after loose she had a nervous breakdown and her next album was a spanish album.
Ever been tempted to go off on a real tangent and do a bit of heavy metal?
Hey, that would be fun! Thatās one thing I havenāt really done yet. But I am a fan of some metal music. I went through a whole phase where I listened to a lot of Soulfly, System of a Down and Deftones. One of the first bands I was really passionate about were the Smashing Pumpkins.
No opinion on her music but sheās got good taste.
listening to the spirit indestructible album right now for the first time in a decade. pretty dreadful. the lead single (big hoops) is worse than i remembered, probably her worst vocal performance. spirit indestructible the song is pretty cool, the one with nas is good too. thats about it.
this is gonna be the lowest engagement for a hgatr isnt it
She has a very annoying voice. Used to really bother me when I was younger, now itās just mildly irritating.
No amount of Timberland can save her.
I like to kid myself I know a lot about music, but Ms Furtadoās career has almost entirely passed me by. I remember Iām Like A Bird and thatās it. Hadnāt even heard of half the album list up there.
Feels like a 2.5 for me. Decent early career but not one with much longevity. A lot of the stuff with Timberland hasnāt aged particularly well. Hasnāt had a hit in 15 years. Yeah, 2.5, rounded down to 2 ā got nothing against her but canāt muster up too much enthusiasm either.
Went for a 4 purely for the singles from Loose. Massive nostalgia bangers, remind me of going out at uni.
Surprised so many people here have such an in depth knowledge of Furtadoās catalogue, was honestly an artist I literally never thought about or took seriously except as a purveyor of a couple of radio hits (Iām pretty sure I only know Like a Bird, which is outright irritating, and Maneater, which is a bit of a banger). Will abstain based on my limited knowledge.
I wonder what the most ālightweightā frivolous pop act is that can get a thread going where people discuss their deep album cuts (not saying Furtado is lightweight or trying to be dismissive of pop as a genre, but sometimes I feel like we could get a Hearāsay HGATR and weād have people say well actually the b-side to Everybody had amazing production work⦠and maybe it does! Just intrigued how much knowledge of this stuff is out there).
Say It Right is a great song
didnāt like Maneater at the time but nostalgia has made me enjoy it more
dunno other than that
I really like her - sheās got a really great voice, distinctive and versatile. Listening to the first album again for the first time in absolutely ages and thereās loads going on. Itās a lot, lot more than the inoffensive daytime radio fodder which seems to be the general impression. Really great summertime record.
Only other one I really know is Loose and itās a bit of a mixed bag, but the good stuff is amazing. Clearly remember there being an absolute horrorshow run of reviews when it came out, basically saying that using sex to sell music was āinsincereā (at best) and essentially slut shaming her (at worst)? Remember thinking at the time how fucked up it was on a bunch of different levels. Probably sounds overblown or highfalutin, but was one of those pieces of contemporary art that really holds a mirror up.
I didnāt know that
but suspect that all the bullshit contributed massively to that. Glad that she managed to come back from it all, even though she was pretty obviously not the same force again.
The more Iāve typed out, the greater I think she is. Giving her a 5
Iām like a bird, I like to shit on cars.
(3/5 she has a good voice and did the postmodern all the styles at once thing pretty well for a while there. The loose stuff fell at a point of peak Timbo saturation and Iād had enough by then so was never my thing.)
Wouldnāt mind hearing that tape she did with Dev Hynes.
Loose era was great, everything else has been middling to boring. 3/5 for the bangers.

Also voted for āShit On The Radioā as itās the funniest song title Iāve ever heard.

It is funny how horribly dated that Timbaland era sounds now. Basically all just sounds like Justin Timberlake beat boxing.
Yeah although I hope sheās not saying SP are heavy metal!
Has Shakira been done?
Not understanding this at all. Promiscuous still sounds massive, that bass
Its weird thinking back to that, isnāt it. Feels totally absurd because if Loose came out today it would seem pretty mild.
