what do you think of the birthday party

Pretty much the same. I might feel differently if I were around when they were in their heyday but whenever I hear them I can’t help but think that kind of stuff has all been done better elsewhere.

17 Studio albums and for the best 3 to arguably be the most recent 3 is just ridiculous. The amount of genuine energy they put into their performance, he’s 60+ right, phenomenal stuff.

Giving Push The Sky Away album a listen here and my musings are the silence / hush moments that develop in many of their tracks feels like when you know someone so well you don’t need to talk, just comfortable in their company, silence is okay. When their music arcs and spits, it does it almost peerlessly. Just such a raw wholesome sound.

“I’m transforming, I’m vibrating, look at me now”.

would be curious to know who you mean

When we got married my wife walked into the venue to Are You the One That I’ve Been Waiting For.

Our first dance was The Ship Song.

Skeleton Tree was released very shortly after my dad died, and soundtracked my grief in an aural hug kind of way.

We went to see them in Italy on the Skeleton Tree tour. It was (perhaps surprisingly) the most life affirming gig that I’ve ever been to.

A bit special.

Probs a 5 just for this pic of him running into Jonny Greenwood

Also a patron for a book shop in Kenilworth. They have a cardboard cutout of Nick near the front door.

Music for people that want to feel clever about listening to music

Why do Nick Cave fans always offer up their fandom so readily?

I like some stuff quite a bit, but deffo more rubbish than gold in the career-span

He seems like a good guy tbf

But I’m knocking a 2.5 down to a 2 for the fun of chipping a decimal place off a sacred cow

cos he’s fab and means a lot to a lot of people.

Be interested to see if you think that Nick Cave has the fans who are most guilty of letting you know all the time how much they love him.

glad you’re having fun. That showed him eh?

No.

Afraid it doesn’t look sunny enough to be wearing those sunglasses, plus a leather jacket. Oh dear!

I’d have to sit down and listen to The Birthday Party to remember who I’m thinking of but off the top of my head they do some stuff that’s in a similar ballpark to The Cramps and whenever I hear that I think, “man I should listen to The Cramps more.” And their more feral post-punk stuff sounds like things that were done better (imo, obvs) by various Amphetamine Reptile bands much later. Maybe they’d have left more of an impression if I’d heard them first, I dunno.

I hope Jonny had a nice school trip though and managed to get the coach back ok.

He’s over 60. Glaucoma is a very real possibility.

apologies to him if that’s the case

I mean yeah and no

Likewise no-one else is wearing a coat. Maybe old Nick’s just feeling the cold.

yeah, looks like he has some balance issues as well maybe caused by high blood pressure
