🎵 How Good Are They Really 🎵 Nina Simone

Was planning to do a different artist today but I think this one will be more apt.

Los Camp are officially better than the Stones

Doesn’t appear to be a “6” on your 1-5 poll.

The absolute best, don’t think there’s been anyone who’s music has emotionally affected me more

Sorry to JAG but the timing was too good not to share. Literally just posted the latest ep of a podcast I co host and it ends with Nina Simone.

5 obviously

That’s DOCTOR Nina Simone to you!

Looks like Aretha’s in trouble. 5/5

I never knew she wrote ‘Young, Gifted and Black’ before making that poll. There’s a fact for you.

Don’t mind the songs I’ve heard. Not crazy about her. Never bought or downloaded her music. 2

“And that’s a fact!”

Where’s the lie

Never listened to her music, only know a few songs.

But I can’t imagine any she’s shit, hot takes, so this’ll be interesting to watch.

She is shit hot

think this version of Stars is my favourite. bit annoying that all its youtube comments are bojack references now though

some good deep(er) cuts

Sandy Denny cover:

gone full funk

5/5 musically, and an incredibly important figure. I go through phases of listening to her a lot. Don’t think she should get a pass for some pretty horrendous behaviour though.

Kind of like doing a how good is he: mohammad ali

Like her music is incredible but she’s one of the few on the list who used that as part of a wider social activism, knowing that her career would suffer for it. A complicated and imperfect (deeply flawed) person but a remarkable human, singer and songwriter.

0.7 better than my prediction? Chuffed

I can recognise her historical importance, but she has been forever ruined for me by a former housemate who used to put on The Best Of Nina Simone very loudly late at night when he was drunk and maudlin, which was about three times a week. Jesus, Paul, I’m trying to get to sleep here / 5

One of the greatest voices, don’t know anyone else who sounds like her and she could wring so much emotion out of both her own and other people’s songs. Maybe the best at covers ever? She does some really good George Harrison ones. Anyone who wants an easily digestible album to start with I’d really recommend Sings The Blues. Contains this which rules

Easy 5/5

Really says something when her “Very Best Of” doesn’t have room for many of her best songs.

This is always breathtaking

Probably going 4 I guess. Undeniably great voice, some absolutely classic songs (including definitive versions of some standards), but not an artist I reach for very often.
