Well you should! Theo’s suggestion above is a good place to start

Nah NiN are more than just a “heavy band” and I think they’re generally pretty liked around here

A 5, obviously, they were unlike anything else when o first heard them in my early teens and I still pick out an incredible wealth of detail to this day. Cool to see The Fragile getting some love too

The Fragile and The Downward Spiral are both contenders for my all-time top 10.

I’ll probably bang out a lengthy post later today.

Started listening to Ghosts I-IV and the first few tracks are gorgeous. Much better than their supposed ‘heavy’* stuff.

*dressing up pop/punk songs in steampunk clothing is not ‘heavy’

Is your vote for Bad Witch accidental or is this a bit?

Hope he makes his choice based on the Twin Peaks performance alone TBH

This is an odd take, I’m not sure they ever described themselves as “heavy”/loads of “heavy” music tales influence from pop and punk?

Ah wait, it went a bit shit rock for a minute there, but now it’s gone a bit Angelo Badalamenti.

Also went The Perfect Drug as song largely because it often gets overlooked coming from Lost Highway but it is a BANGER

I remember hearing it was briefly used for a Vodaphone advert and then got quickly changed because of the inferred drug taking, does anyone remember or can confirm this?

Nah, they should be ok. Firmly part of the establishment these days

Mmm apparently this advert did exist but there doesn’t appear to be a link anywhere

I once seen someone describe NIN as Adam Ant with a distortion pedal. That that was before They covered Adam Ant.

But the Steampunk stuff is guff, NIN were coming from the industrial scene and Cyberpunk. Steampunk came about 20 years later. It took a long time for The Difference Engine to seep into popular culture.

Adore them, huge band for me growing up. The Fragile was always my favourite, some truly astounding moments on it.

Love this, such a vibe, love the drums from an entirely different song

Do quite like everything from With Teeth onwards too. They are a bit camp and silly at times but that’s part of the fun.

Seen them live twice, once at the academy in Birmingham and it was decent to good. And again at Reading… 08? I think. And somehow, despite it being a festival set, it was the best sound I’ve ever heard. The bass :flushed: if I could go back to one single gig of my life again, it’d probably be that. We took our ‘townie’ mate that year, he detested ‘greb’ music but came along for the lols, he sat at the back for the start of that show and by the end he was down the front moshing. The power of Trent.

Plus, OLD TOWN ROAD

(The first comment cracked me up: 'tried to save my horse, but my horse kept slipping away)

@IvorDewdney you’re really smashing through all my teenage favourites atm, slow down!)

I’m not saying they did - referring more to the perception of them as such.

From what I remember in the run up to the Fragile coming out for example, the press was very much along the lines of them being a really extreme band that made a horrible noise. Fans I knew at the time certainly tended to refer to them in that way.

I’ve never been able to square that away with the actual music on those first two records, which was very ‘poppy’ (not the best phrase here but not sure what else to use) to me.

Isn’t that just music press (and as a consequence some fans) being kinda unimaginative? That’s still not the band’s fault or intention

Now this I can get on board with!

That’s fair. Also, I loved that book when I was a young’un. Haven’t read it in years. Maybe I should give it a re-read.

They’d be a five if it wasn’t for most of the output i’ve heard this century which is a bit boring on the most part. Don’t really have the time now but The Downward Spiral is incredible, a true masterpiece. Before it came out heaviness to me was all about guitars bu tthis album opened me up to a whole new world.
