  1. I think they’re magnificent.

I’d become aware of them because Svefn-g-englar was on a Melody Maker or NME cover CD and it stood out, but I didn’t immediately love it. But then I went to see GYBE at the Royal Festival Hall and Sigur Rós supported. Never have I been so captivated by a sound. Really digging in to the optimal acoustics of the venue, it was just another worldly experience (GBYE then turned up really late and we had to leave before the end to catch our train).

Since then I’ve seen them live a number of times, in less optimal venues, as well as outdoor festival shows, and it’s never been anything less than affecting.

They not a band I choose to listen to at home a great deal, but I that run of Ágætis byrjun to Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust is stunning. Valtari, I don’t remember a great deal about, whilst Kveikur feels like a totally different band (but still really good).

So yeah, a 5 for some incredible live experiences and a truly great run of albums.

Two great albums, a few good to middling ones, basically cheated the country of Iceland out of its tax funds and one of them turned out to be a creep to women. Idk, 3?

Was it this one? I absolutely caned this when I got it - introduced me to SG and JJ72. I loved the Blink 182 song from it too, and Ooberman, Astrid and Big Leaves. All made it onto various mix tapes I made around the time.

Can I ask why 40?

8 groups of 5. 32 didn’t seem quite enough and I like round numbers.

Ahah, so top 2 of each progress?

Yeah, normal World Cup structure just with one extra in each group.

Don’t think I’ve ever loved a band as much as I have Sigur Ros between the age of 14-16. Utterly fell in love with their music and the mystique around them. Also loved how you could get really good live recordings of new songs (many of which ended up on Takk) from their semi official website.

Agaetis Byrjun through to Takk is a sublime run. Myrkur on the first album is beautiful too;

Not sure how to score them after a couple naff albums, the drummer stuff and the tax stuff, and them essentially now just being Jonsi and his fella messing about with Timestretch.

I think it was this one:

Ah, I had that one too!

Oh hello. Gonna have a long listen today.

Not a band I listen to that much these days but I’m leaning towards a 5. Will do a proper write-up later.

Who is currently at position 40? Could we have a relegation battle on our hands?

Yeah this but 17-19

Never clicked. Not for lack of trying. Think I prefer my post rock bleak and pummelling instead of soaring and magnificent. Probably a me problem.

Pfft. ALT+0233

Also, they were a very good band.

First time I heard them was Untitled #1 being played on MTV2 and I was pretty transfixed. Not heard anything like it really then and the video was really engrossing.

Since then , I find any album a bit of a slog…not because the music is slow or bad but I just think it’s a bit too much at times and they’re a band better in isolation.

They’re a bit like an old arthouse film, easier to admire than love.

Looks like a 4-way tie at joint 38th with the 4.11 crew - making 41 spaces. If Sigur Ros crack the top 40 they push that down to a 4-way tie at joint 39th, for 42. Either way looks like there’s going to need to be a playoff of some sort to cut one or two of Prince, Cocteau Twins, Wu-Tang Clan and Orbital.
