Saw her bring the Dalai Lama out on stage. That was odd

One of those artists who I felt I should like as they were often sighted by artists I did love. So have periodically tried over the years but I actively dislike everything I’ve heard.

Two biggest songs are covers and her version of Gloria is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard. (Original is terrible too)

1/5.

To a sold out audience?

Saw that too. It was even stranger singing happy birthday to him.

It was Glastonbury, so yes.

Can’t be having that 70’s art rock, angry poet nonsense but she is fantastic live.

Blimey didnt quite realise she made so many ropey single choices.

Its a 5 for me. Always stunning live even if she borders on preachy hippy nonsnse. I like her books, too.

Big 5

Horses is s contender for the all time best album by anybody. It’s got that magic of sounding unique and experimental but also completely accessible and full of excitement and momentum so you just wanna listen to it all the time and it always sounds fresh.

Rest of the her discography is also great, although it does stand in the shadow of Horses. The earlier stuff carries on a lot of what Horses did which you can’t really complain about. The later stuff is an interesting development and actually think Banga could be her best non Horses album. Would like to hear a new album whenever she feels like doing one.

Seen her live 3 time and each time she’s seemed just completely happy to be on the stage and spending time with the crowd, makes it a really joyous communal experience. V wholesome content. She still fills the old songs with passion and edge. Kinda feels like she’s aged into herself, she looks like completely the right person to be singing all her material.

Big hit amongst minor English celebrities as well, I have ended up being stood near one each time I’ve been to see her. Julie Hesmondhalgh (Hayley from Corrie) is a big Patti Smith appreciator, I can tell you.

Saw her in a suitcase advert yesterday and there was no mention of who she was. That was strange.

Oh yeah, also the books absolutely slap. Like really genuinely good.

Her set at Primavera 2015 was one of the best things I’ve seen in my whole fucking life. 5/5.

This post paid for by PROF$.

(Also the albums are great, Radio Ethiopia is incredible.)

Tell you what, Trampin’ is a really underappreciated record

Not quite a five for me, I do find her a bit ….dour? at times but when I’m in the mood she is absolutely the right thing. Going to see her at the end of May. It’s been almost twenty years since I saw her at Vicar St, and I’m really looking forward to it

Love horses, although i rarely put it on. Checked a few of her other records which didn’t do much for me. Have never listened to Radio ethiopia but in light of @Kallgeese recommendation i’ll check it out.
Have never seen her live, would love to.

Always love reading interviews with her and she seems like a cool as fuck lady. Think 3 is about right from me.

I chatted to her at the pizza-hut buffet in Butlins at an ATP once. She seemed lovely.

Saw her a couple of years ago, she was the surprising support act for a big outdoor Nick Cave gig

She was very good but I rarely feel like listening to her at home
