Itā€™s a perfect little track by track podcast. I like how heā€™s not an expert, just a fan.
I drop them in between other podcast eps when I make a playlist.

Stephen Malkmus is so different from all the rest. I guess he had all these fun little pop songs backed up from his Pavement days, so itā€™s all really tight. I think at the time he said he wanted to name the record ā€˜Swedish Reggaeā€™ on the grounds it was ā€˜laid back but preciseā€™ or something, but the record company knocked it back saying it would end up getting miscategorised in record stores!

I bought Pig Lib the day it came out and remember it being a shock to the system. Opening with something as weird and different as Water And A Seat is a quite the statement of intent.

Found Real Emotional Trash a really difficult record to warm to, what with all the long noodly solos and everything. One of my favourite Jicks albums now though

i like the first album but some of it washes over me a little bit. Black Book is amazing and Jenny and the Ess Dog and Jo Joā€™s Jacket are great pop songs, some of the others maybe need a bit more time as i havenā€™t gone back to it in a little while - having a quick flick through the tracks now and thereā€™s more good stuff than i remembered actually (i still find Phantasies a bit annoying though).

i only really got into Pig Lib this year but i reckon itā€™s up there with the best Pavement stuff though, such a great album. whoā€™d have thought heā€™d have such a great 9 minute jam in him. Sparkle Hard is a very fun and playful record but Pig Libā€™s got a lot more depth and substance to it.

Malkā€™s singing on Jenny and the Ess Dog is superb! Really going for it with the crooning. Donā€™t think Iā€™ve heard him do it on any other song

I have to admit, itā€™s the one of his I know least well - detached style combined with long jams is a tough outer shell to crack.

I might give it another go now though.

I hammered his first album when it came out (along with those other early post Pavement albums from PSOI and Marble Valley), so Iā€™ve got a lot of fondness for it.

I read Burmese Days on the back of Pink India, which became one of my favourite novels and Church On White is one of the most gorgeous songs heā€™s written (I think itā€™s about the passing of a friend).

Itā€™s very Steve Malkmus that it contains his most direct straightforward lyrics of his career, but that the subject matter of those songs is stuff like the career development of a pirate, a middle ranking bureaucrat in colonial India and the failed relationship of a couple of jaded hipsters!

On 1% of One, that was probably the least surprising song from Pig Lib at the time - he trailed it pretty hard in the build up to its release and from fading memory, itā€™s the one he chose when doing radio sessions etc.

I read Burmese Days a few years ago and enjoyed it (though not one of my favourite Orwells, I generally prefer his non fiction) but Iā€™ve never really paid attention to the lyrics on Pink India, Iā€™ll have to go back and listen a bit closer

Iā€™ve had a lot of Pavement in my collection since the 1990s but it is only in recent years Iā€™ve realised how much I like them. Crooked Rain is probably my favourite album.

I need to spend some time with Malkmusā€™ albums. Iā€™ve liked the last couple but hadnā€™t paid much attention to the earlier ones.

Grave Architecture is one of my favourite Pavement songs though, so happy to see its inclusion.
