Was a massive fan of theirs as a late teenager; had a 6ftx4ft Placebo poster in my uni bedroom. Went to see them at the student union - looking back, it was remarkably rowdy (there was some bloke windmilling! At a Placebo gig).
Haven’t really listened to them much since uni. Revisited them after someone mentioning them on here, and thought the production sounded pretty dated and weedy. Nevertheless, a solid 3 for the good times.
Voting 5 based purely on a snapshot in time over 20 years ago. Any band that had me that fanatical about their music and live shows, even if short lived, deserves enough credit in the bank to warrant a 5.
I remember them changing the lines in bigmouth strikes again from “walkman started to melt” to “discman started to melt” to make it more up to the minute…
Gone for a 4, they were an important band for me and a friend at school, so have some great memories of hanging out and going to gigs together.
I’m also a big fan of Battle for the Sun, was really into that album at the time even if it hasn’t stuck with people as much as their earlier stuff.
I’ve seen them live more than many other bands due their ubiquity at festivals in the mid 90s and reckon I saw a couple of actual shows too. My liking for them is based mostly on the early singles especially Teenage Angst which is by far their best song. Went off them when Pure Morning came out and not been much of a fan since.
They’re alright, my ex was huge into them, went to see em in Edinburgh with her, nice aul gig. They were never gonna be “my” band though. Generous 3 I guess
Only know some the singles which are getting votes (if I swap Bruise Pristine out for You Don’t Care About Us).
Offhand I wouldn’t have said I liked Placebo but none of the songs I know are bad, a handful of very good singles songs in there with a real clarity of sound, but I would never have listened to an album. I think the androgyny and the appeal with goths was a bit too much for me from a band whose debut album came out the same year 14 year old me was enjoying Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene, etc.
Will abstain as I’m not going to go and listen to a full album, and I’m certainly not going to listen to the 36(!) track best-of on Spotify, but will put a few singles on.
