I think this quite a lot but can’t help myself.

I’m afraid all the indie points have been collected by @cutthelights in this thread.

This has made me realise I’ve not clocked a single DiS Radiohead meme in the thread. Mainly because it made my mind leap to inventing drums

Man I’m bored.

  • Blow Out
  • Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong
  • (Nice Dream)

Killer Cars

Maybe your music teacher was just especially cool?

I like that they leave all the drums out and your brain just fills in the spaces. It’s a smart, innovative move.

Just vote for Maquiladora instead, it’s kinda the same

Was massively into them when the bends came out, and loved Ok Computer. Had my mind blown when Kid A came out and loved it - neatly coincided with going to uni and discovering a lot more electronic music before it came out so was a proper awakening. They’ll always be important to me and the times i saw them around those albums they were incredible, but i’ve failed to feel much about them since. Enjoyed In Rainbows when it came out and some other songs but that’s about it.

For that period when i was a teen/early twenties they were great, and was truely good to see a genuinely massive band do something a bit different (and it was a bold step for the band to take, not matter how much we can look back and say they ripped off warp records)

5 from me just for that period of 94 - 2001ish

Finally!

Just want to say (again) that there will be slightly less massive and well known artists covered by the way, but it’s good to get as many people involved as possible, so we’re doing a lot of big hitters for the most part. The list at the moment covers a fair range of genres and that so should be something everyone can discuss. All suggestions still welcome.

I really love Radiohead.

Objectively and intellectually there are lots of reasons not to like them. They’re privileged white boys who bang on about alienation (though I am prepared to believe that they did indeed feel alienated relative to their peers, they are old enough to know better now). Their music is quite samey and easy to pastiche. Their changes of artistic direction are overplayed. And they do use the same chord progressions over and over again, almost exclusively in minor keys.

But I don’t like them for objective or intellectual reasons, I like them for emotional reasons, because their music connected with me and made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I don’t know why this is, just like I don’t know why my favourite colour is blue. It just is, that’s what the universe decided for me.

If you like their style of music, it’s hard to think of a band that has produced such a consistently enjoyable body of work over such a long period.

If you’re younger than me (not difficult) I can see why you might regard them with something between disinterest and disdain, because any band that’s been around as long as they have will carry a certain amount of rock god baggage with them. I would probably hate them if I was under 30.

It’s really interesting to see a wide range of takes on here (though obviously mine is the correct one). Slightly confounded my expectations of how it would play out.
